Question about system info - Sony SVR2000

Hello

I am new to this, so please bear with me.

My sony SVR2000 is not new, but it has never been opened or altered in any way. Before I start messing with it, I'd like to know a few things.

If I follow instructions correctly, what are the realistic chances that I'll ruin my PVR?

Also, Can I download programming info through the Internet if I add a NIC card?

Also, I guess that I have version 1.3 of the software. Should I upgrade to a higher version? Can I do that? If so, what version should I upgrade to keeping in mind that I want to hack in the future?

Thanks in advance,

Whenever you're doing upgrades, there is always a chance that something could go wrong, but as long as you're following the instructions properly, that chance is very small.

Yes, but you can't use a NIC like you'd use in a PC. You'll need a specially made card called TurboNet (see www.9thtee.com about how to get them, they cost about $70). If your TiVo has v3.0 or higher of TiVo's software, it already has built-in support (although TiVo won't support you themselves if you have problems) for the card, all you have to do is put in ",#401" (without quotes) as the dialing prefix in the phone setting area. If the software is under v3.0, you'll have to install the drivers and settings yourself. Please note that you'll still need a subscription to TiVo's service if you do this (we do not support stealing service here).

Most definitely. v3.0 (the current version that SVR-2000s use) has a lot more features and support for items than older versions. To get the latest software, just plug-in the modem and have the TiVo make a daily call. You might have to do this a few times before the software download happens.
If the modem is busted, you'll have to look into other ways of getting the software update (get the NIC installed an set up the long way or see if you can get a backup image from a SVR-2000 with v3.0 from someone here and re-image the main drive with it (any recordings and such on it will be lost)). v3.0 will not limit what you can hack (adding FTP/Telnet/TiVoWeb/etc.) that I can think of and even if it did, people here would probably find ways around it. :)

Hope this helps,
Eric

What makes you think you still have 1.3? Generally, any unit that has been dialing in regularly will have software 3.0.1 at this point - makes the Turbonet easy.

I just figured that I had 1.3 because I got my tivo when they first came out and I never actively upgraded the system. If it upgrades automatically, then I probably have version 3.

Thanks for everything!! I appreciate the time spent. I'll try to give back as much as I take for the list.
