What is HD speed in Series 2 DirecTiVos?

What is the HD speed in the Series 2 DirecTiVos, 7200 or 5400? I upgraded my Series 1 DirecTiVo with a 120 gig 5400 drive, and am considering getting a Series 2 to replace it, but if the Series 2 uses 7200 I'd like to match the speed, which would require a new drive.

It really does not matter what your hard drive speed is. My Sony T60 had a 4500rpm drive that I replaced with two 7200 rpm Maxtor's. I would have purchased 5400rpm drives, but the 7200rpm's were cheaper at the time. Folks here who've researched this have concluded that TiVo does not tax the hard disk speed at all, so disk speed or cache memory really does not matter. Search for a quality drive at a good price.

I'm only planning on installing a companion drive for the drive thats already in there so I'd like to speed match it. If I were replacing both drives I'd be less concerned, also, 7200 rpm drives are much louder then 5400 rpm. Maybe the Series 2 TiVos can take advantage of the extra speed, I dunno.

There's really no reason to worry about matching drive speeds. The original drive in my Sony T60 Series 1 DirecTivo box was actually a 4500rpm drive -- good luck finding one of those anywhere!

Also, the new 7200 rpm Maxtor Diamondmax drives that I installed were actually quieter than the one 4500 rpm drive that I replaced. I used Maxtor's Acoustic Management utility to set the drives to "quiet" mode.

And no, the Series 2 Tivo's don't do anything requires the the potential faster speed of a 7200 rpm drive. Realize that you're dealing with a compressed MPEG bit stream with a data rate that simply does not tax the hard drive throughput rate at all.

By the way, I notice you have a Sony 34XBR800 TV. How do you like it? I've been eyeing a 40" XBR800.
