TIVO Series 2 Upgrade offer

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

The thread regarding the upgrade offer is getting too long....my question may get lost.

One of the benefits of buying a TIVO from a Best Buy or a Good Guys is the ability to purchase an extended warranty. Can anyone at Tivo tell me whether an extended warranty is available for purchase along with the upgrade offer?

Thank you.

I'm not from TiVo, but I'm 99% sure the answer is "no, no extended warranty is available with TiVos purchased thru the website". You CAN get professional installation, though. :)

I've raised this a few times on that thread - and Pony did respond - something about 'sometimes we do promotions with our partners, sometimes we don't'. Apparently TiVo doesn't understand the worth of buying local and extended warranties. However, if you count the fact that my first TiVo was DOA and had to go back, I've used my extended warranty 3 times now (the other 2 were modem failures). Big reason I probably won't rush to take them up on their 'generous' offer

I suspect they do, and thus are being kind.

Which is covered under the standard 90 day warrantee at no cost, and for a year with minimal cost. The extended warrantee makes absolutely zero difference here.

Which would be a non-issue with S2 if you wanted the upgrade - since you'd be using the USB ports for ethernet. Which aren't susceptible to power surges (or, rather, if you get fried over ethernet then there's so much more damaged in your house you'll probably be filing a claim).

There are 3rd party shops that repair TiVo modems for a fraction of what TiVo asks for anyway, plus ways to use an extended modem if you're into hacking (ok... not with an S2...). I seriously question the value of an extended warranty, particularly for a S2.

Let's get real, the $79 charged by Best Buy for the over the counter warranty extension is well worth it.

Shipping your unit to Tivo is a hassel and takes two weeks min. trust me, my daughter's had to go back three times.

Take care,

I think the real issue here is that TiVo is offering a special promotion - to do so, they want to sell the units direct and at list price to minimize their potential losses. As a reseller of this unit below their price, I completely understand their shutting us out of this business - they can't afford to sell us a TiVo for less and still honor this program. They can't for Best Buy either.

This is a good deal - the first of its kind since they stopped allowing sub transfers.

Zathrus - it's a matter of opinion. Between units that failed within a day and the modem failures, I've swapped my Tivo 4 times in the last two years. The ability to put it in a box, drive 15 minutes, get a new one, and have a working Tivo back home 60 minutes after I determined it failed is worth something to me. I respect that it isn't worth much to you. BB takes a lot of crap on this forum, some ofit deserved, but at least my local store is real good with no-hassle support when you by the extended warranty. If you're happy with leaving yours in the shop for weeks. I respect that (you probably have extra ones 8-}). But for me, I prefer this path. I'd hate to order my new Tivo from Tivo, move the lifetime sub over, and have it die in a week - I mean, where am I then? Unlike Maxtor, TiVo doesn't advance-ship replacements are far as I know. So I'm out shipping costs, time, and god-forbid they decide to repair, or replace with a refurb.

Sorry - the extended warranty DOES buy you something, even if it's of little value to you.
