HDVR2 Replacement Fan

Can I replace the fan in the HDVR2 with either:

http://phamcomputer.safeshopper.com/43/79.htm?551

or

http://phamcomputer.safeshopper.com/43/246.htm?551

?

I will use the 18CFM fan if the HDVR2 gets too hot when I put it in the armoir in our family room.

Currently with stock fan, in a fairly cool room, my HDVR2 is running between 37C and 39C.

I know when I put it in the armoir it will heat up real quick.

My DSR6000 is running between 48C and 54C in the armoir.

Cheers

I would try the unit in the armoir and monitor it closely - its builty to be in fairly confined areas.

We are coming out with a product soon that should provide additional cooling for HDVR2 units . . .

It's in the armoir and running, so far, between 45C and 48C, which is called "normal". Is this really normal?

Does anybody know the specs on the stock fan? Like CFM and dBA? I'd like to keep the HDVR2 at the lowest temp possible, without sacrificing too much noise.

We have the specs around here somewhere I think, but in the meantime, we can tell you that 45-48C really is normal. The unit will simply shut itself down if it gets too hot - and you'll know if that happens!

How about 50-52C?

Where is the temp sensor anyway? For what exactly is it reporting the temperature? The CPU? The

Also, any idea what the temp is that divides "normal" from "above normal"?

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks, Michael! I'm not too worried about the 45-48C. However, if I can get it event lower without a lot of effort (like simply replacing the fan), I would like to. The way I feel is the lower the temp, the better.

If you have those specs, please post them. Thanks!

legalaliens,

The stock fan is various manufacturers (Delta, Sunon), but is about 20cfm. I've been using the adda fans you asked about and don't recomment them - I've had 4 start making noise (rattle type noise) and when I wanted them for their silence, well ......

So, I would suggest a Sanyo Denki Pico 25 (for example from www.plycon.com) or a pabst 60mm if you can find one.

However, rather that worry about the fan in the TiVo, consider putting a 120mm fan in the back of your amoir just above the TiVo. There are very good 120v ones from Panasonic abailable, very quiet, and will probably do the job nicely for you.

This might sound silly, but is there any other kinds of cooling out there, such as liquid cooling (air to liquid to air exchange) or what's that kind of cooling that involves a bi-metal material with voltage across it or something like that, so that there is a hot side and a cool side. Anyway, it seems that a fan moving air might be a less than optimal solution for this type of hardware. Any ideas?

Are you sure the stock fan is about 20cfm? For some reason, I thought is was a lower cfm rating.

My new series 2 (on for a few days now) is running at 40C. Sure glad I order one from TiVo and not the units with no fan at Best Buy.

Thanks, I just sent in an order. My current (Sunon) replacement fan has been way too loud, and I hope this will help!

I hope you didn't order the Vantec "Stealth". I made that mistake a while ago - these are quite noisy fans. I'd recommend one of the ADDA fans to be found here.

Is the noise level of the Sanyo Denki Pico 25 21dBA or 28 dBA? The web site has conflicting information.

Hmm, I hope I wasn't too hasty. The ADDA fans look good (and cheap!). Yes, I had heard that the Vantec Stealths are not too stealthy.

Oh well, I suppose I can always buy yet another fan if the Sanyo is too loud. I wish I could find these locally, since the shipping costs are always about as much as the actual product costs.

I did notice the discrepancy in the dB numbers (21 vs. 28). Hmm.

bump....

Does anybody know the specs on the stock fan of the HDVR2? dBA, CFM, etc...

Ditto for the DSR6000.

Thanks!
