Can Tivo Series II download updates via broadband?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello, I am considering the recent upgrade offer, and am wondering if the series II can d/l updates via broadband? Presumably through a USB to ethernet adpater.
I could not find any info on this on tivo's site.

Thanks for any info.

yes....and you must have not searched very hard

Tivo's site mentions broadband updates in version OS 4.0 which comes out timed with April's HMO release but the Tivo site doesn't say *anything* about broadband updates today (so the orginal poster was right and looked "pretty hard") because they aren't supported. Yes you can do it today if you look around the forum for how, but it is unsupported and it will be easier to do in April when OS 4.0 comes out.

Cheers!

Search for ,#401 for a number of posts on the subject. Basically, you're right on. In software versions 3.0 and later (for standalone S2 boxes), Tivo put in the drivers for a number of popular USB --> ethernet adapters. You plug in the adapter into the Tivo and your home network, and make sure that there is a DHCP server on your network handing out IP addresses. Place ,#401 in the dial-in prefix, and reboot the tivo. It will now get guide updates over broadband. None of this is officially supported until version 4.0 (in other words, you can't call TiVo support with any issues), but it works just fine.

Thank you, I actually went back and looked around the site again after mtmra70's both unfriendly and apparently inaccurate reply. Needless to say I still did not find anything. So, all the initial setup stuff would certainly not d/l via broadband then I guess.

Does anyone have a link with details of the contents of the spring release?

Thanks very much.

of course he should! this is *the* site for how to really work your Tivo.

If the box comes with 3.0 or later, yes, you can download everything over broadband, even the initial setup. I would imagine any S2 coming from TiVo right now would have 3.2 on it from the factory, but the tricky part is that you can't really tell what software version is on it until it finishes the initial setup.

I don't think that you can do an initial download of stuff via broadband but i defer to the experts... but run a big telephone line for the first time and the you can setup the broadband. For now I run on the telephone line but in April I will be wireless with 802.11b via a USB->802.11b adapter.

OOPS: I was wrong you can download everything via broadband if the unit comes with 3.0 or greater which I believe is every S2 unit with USB 2.0 ports (although they work at USB 1.1) which includes the S2 80 hour, the "new" S2 40 hour, and maybe the 60 HR (which is USB 1.1 hardware?)

No prob - thanks for all the replies folks - though I'm still not sure if it's clear or not whether you'd be able to d/l initial stuff but you certainly will be able to down the road. I'll prob take advantage of this offer.

Thanks.

yea, you can try the initial call with the broadband code, but i never did it. after that i had put in the code and mine worked. of course, make sure you get a compatiable usb nic, i have the 3com one(not sure of the model off hand)

With an 80-hour Series 2, you'll be able to use broadband only. You'll have to reboot once during the initialization process (after the step of changing the phone options and setting the dialing prefix). I just did this on my new 80-hour (actually I had to reboot twice because I made a mistake on my router/dhcp server end.)

It looks like you can do the intial setup via broadband straight out of the box with out any reboots. I just did it... err am doing it right now. Opened the Series 2, plugged in the IPAQ USB Ethernet ($5 from BB), connected the network cable, video, audio, and only then did I plug it in. System booted up, USB light came on, Link light came on, started to do the initial setup and changed the dialing prefix right from the start to ,#401 and it worked like a charm and never needed a phone line. Oh and the 20-30 minute download actually took like 1 minute.

Just an FYI for anyone...

Interesting. I had done the same thing, but didn't get the link light on. But that looks like that was due to my problem at the router end. Good to know: no reboots are needed! Thanks.

Has anyone used a USB to 802.11b adapter and if it works which models will work.

Thanks

No USB -> Wireless adapters work in 3.2. Support for some of these is expected to be included in 4.0. TivoPony has hinted that Linksys will be supported, although other brands probably will as well (since a bunch use identical chipsets). Here's a link:
