American Idol Opinion
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So I decided to watch American Idol for the first time this past Tuesday. I really liked it actually. Well there was this one guy that I thought sung really well (Clay Aiken). And I really wanted him to make it to the next round. Well one of the judges told him he had a great voice and sung really well, but that he doesn't have the American Idol "look". So he was one of thr top 3, but not among the top 2 that get to move on. I was so upset that he didn't make it because I bet that the main reason he didn't was because people didn't vote for him since he doesn't have the American Idol "look". UGH!!! Should be totally based on talent, not look. Plus who is to say what the American Idol "look" is anyways.
And what really upsets me is that this isn't the first time I see something like this and so it just makes me that much angrier when I continute to see it. I same the same this time and time again!!!

In general the public votes on who sang the best each night... in fact on the first version of the series a singer who was clearly one of the top 2 had an off-singing night near the end of the competition and was voted out in favor of a clearly more unpopular and less talented singer! americans have short attention spans and forget past performance quickly. that said when 2 people are equally good singers, image does come into play and isn't totally unfair because image sells and makes American Pop music what it is today... bubblegum and fun.

Yeah well the girl that got picked over him I didn't think was very good at all. I thought that by far Clay had a better voice and sung way better than Kimberly.
And the ideal of image sells and makes American Pop is exactly my point!!! That it isn't always just based on talent. And image really should not matter. Especially in this case when he was far better than than Kimberly.

It's called American Idol. That doesn't mean the best singer. When was the last time you saw a ugly "pop" star? Few and far between.

I have seen several unattractive pop stars to be honest. And the thing is that this guy isn't ugly. So you are saying lets pick someone with a better look but not as good of a voice, when the point is for them to be able to sing well and go on to create their own album?

I can't prove this, but I also think there is a serial position effect happening in the American Idol voting. I think that many viewers miss the first singer or two and therefore don't vote for them in the same numbers.
This has panned out in both of the last two competitions in American Idol 2. However, it can certainly be argued that the first contestants both weeks had other strikes against them (Kimberly (the attractive blonde) had an attitude problem and Clay looked a little goofy).
Still, I think being the first singer of the night has a distinct disadvantage. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Actually, in the first week of the voting competition, there was a young blonde girl named Kimberly Caldwell. The judges expected her to do well, but invariably, she came off as too cocky, and she didn't get the votes.

Then how do you explain the fact that Ruben got the most number of votes?

Well personally I don't like Ruben, but that is just me. But the reason I say that about Clay is because the judges themselves said specifically that Clay does not have the American Idol look. They really liked Ruben though for one reason or another.

Good thing you said pop. Quite a few uglies in the "Rock" department.

I was thinking of "slash" and some other rock stars so I added the pop. When I thinking of pop stars I think of Destiny's Child/Justin Timberlake sorta of thing. Can they sing? Yes Are their better singers out there but aren't "it"? sure. To be honest I can't think of a single unattractive "pop icon" Sure there are Uncle Krackers and people like that (can sing no not that cute) but they aren't the TeenBeat pop star type which American Idol is drawing from (IMHO of course).

I personally don't think the the current "pop" singers are all that, but that is just my opinion. I like a singer cause of their music, I could careless what they look like.

I think both of the two rounds when as expected so far. Clay was definitely in the top 3 but I think that Reuben was a favorite and Kimberley Locke got through based on her outstanding performances in the qualifying rounds plus perhaps a little Frenchie syndrome since by this time most people knew that Frenchie was out and Kimberley was her friend and had some similarities.
We have not seen the next two rounds but I am sure that Kimberley Caldwell and Clay will be back for the wild card round and have decent chance at the two spots.

Well I really hope Clay gets picked in the wild card round. I would like to see him move on.

we'll see both Clay and blonde Kimberly in the wild card show.
I'm glad that they are putting talent first this time around. The teeny boppers that voted EJ, RJ, and _J into top 10 last season are obviously not watching now.

do you like clay because he's from NC?

Nope!! Cause I am not really from NC, I am actually from CT.
Do people really not think Clay was all that good?

Clay was one of the better ones up there, but his voice is way too 'showtune' for me. I much preferred Ruben and Kimberly Locke.

I've noticed the judges say that about a number of people this year. Why is it that the competition is exclusively picking a popstar? I'd say that Miles Davis is an American Idol, or keeping with a singer - Billie Holliday or Ella Fitzgerald. I think the success of Norah Jones should make this obvious to them that it is possible other types of performers can sell records.
Has anyone heard if anyone else from the first show has gotten a deal with another label?
Posted by: tonyoci
The show is what it is, it's job is to pick a Pop Star not any other kind of performer, that has been clearly stated a number of times especially by Simon who claims to know nothing about anything except pure straight pop. Perhaps the name is incorrect - in the UK it was called "Popstars" or something like that.
I am not sure if many of these people would be "signed" but a number of them could make careers as singers either performing on smaller stages or in shows, there are many people can make a decent career as a singer in backup roles etc on touring productions.

What do you mean by "showtune"?
Posted by: tonyoci
I think he means kind of "Broadway" singer style rather than "Pop" singer style. It's the difference between a singer who performs on record and sings pop songs, and one who is more of a singer from a broadway show. There have been a few who you can clearly tell are the broadway style, they sing like they are telling a story with the lyrics not singing a song.

Oh ok...yeah I can see that.
Maybe it was he choice of song, would like to try and hear him sing more of a pop song.
But yeah I can see that.

I think some of the song choices have been terrible but it's also very tough to do justice to a song when you are only accompanied by a piano.
I also thought that Kimberley Locke was very weak in repeatedly performing the same song, everyone else has changed their songs.

Yes I totally agree. I really give that one girl props in the last show that tried doing a more up beat song to the piano. I forgot her name. I thought she did well with it.

Personally, I think Clay is getting cuter and cuter, you can't call him "ugly" anymore. He's had one of the world's best makeovers.
Remember that the show is voting for people, not voting against them. Nobody can say "I'll vote aginst Clay since I think he's ugly."
I think Clay was the third best singer on the show that night, and that's all there is to it. He will be back in the wildcard round, and I expect him to be selected for the final 10, but not the American Idol for the "broadway" issue noted above.
The show wants to build up drama and keep you tuning in, so they'll seed shows like this with 3 popular and strong singers vying for 2 spots. This will invest you in coming back for the wildcard show.

Is it Jennifer Fuentes, the one that sang "I wanna dance with somebody" by Whitney Houston?

Clay does sing nicely. But Simon is right. He doesn't have the look. Can you imagine pre-teen girls swooning over him??
Anyway, you should watch live, or *very* close to live. Then you can vote.

I can imagine them swooning over him just because he would be popular and famous if he made it. He isn't ugly either.

He doesn't seem like an "idol" to me. I think he has a good voice, but better suited for the theater stage or singing on Disney movie soundtracks (e.g., singing voice of Aladdin).

I think Clay has the "look" of a country singer -- he reminds me a little of that country singer guy from the first Real World series (was it Jon?).

Yep, that was Jon...but he was in the second Real World series, not the first :)

Except Brad Kane (the singing voice of Aladdin) totally has the look (he's adorable!) and is now trying a popular music career :-)

I thought Clay had sung better in the past, so was not surprised he didn't advance. But I also thought Ruben was only so-so that night (hadn't he also sung his song at some previous point?). And if Clay doesn't have the look, well I really don't think Ruben does either!
A related issue that bugs me is Simon's picking on certain people's clothes. OK, a few have not been great outfits, and he's pointed that out, but that should not be a determining factor. For instance, Ruben wore a football jersey and no one mentioned that (OK, it was personalized with specific references important to him, like his area code, but who cares?). Last night Simon criticized one guy for just wearing a sweater. Well, if you're going to analyze their clothes, do it for everyone!
I don't mean to pick on Ruben, I actually think he has one of the best voices (although I wasn't overly impressed with his most recent performance). It just seems like the judges are not applying the same criteria to all the contestants.

Simon's insistence on classifying voices as Showtune versus Pop is ridiculous. If you can sing, you can sing. Sure some folks can sing different kinds of songs better than others, but if they don't want showtune voices, why the heck do they have this round with piano music? And why was the beginning with NO music. If they are really looking for "pop" stars, give them full musical accompaniment and dancers and VOICE ENHANCERS from the get go.
Oh, and I am certain that Simon would pan Diana Ross for a showtune voice or would say that a certain guy who had a few hits about 15 years or so ago didn't have the look (Rick Astley). And I am certain that Paula would say that Steve Perry "oversang" anything he did. Gee, wasn't he an ugly pop star?

Man, thank God for this. Especially on the show this past week, man some of the comments the contestants made to the judges was just unbelievable. Do they really think that arguing like that with the judges is really going to get them voted into the top 10??
