OK... I'm ready to purchase my 120GB upgrade! Bottom-line price not being the most important factor, I'm looking at either the Maxtor 4R120L0 for $172.31 shippped and taxed (Computers 4 Sure) , or the Samsung SV1204H for $153.06 shipped and no tax (A Matter Of Fax) . Both are 5400rpm models.

Anyone got any opinons?

Thanks!:D

Yeah, buy the Samsung...it's nice and quiet, with a 3-year warranty, but spend about $125 instead by looking at PriceWatch.

I agree, Samsung all the way.

About the Samsungs - they also seem to be more reliable. We show many fewer problems with Samsungs than we did with Maxtors (and way less than WDs).

I bought two Samsungs but can't seem to get the two to coexist properly on the Tivo. They work fine together on the PC, so I *know* it's jumpered properly (I hooked them up with a non cable-select cable to make absolute sure the cables weren't the issue). Any ideas?

I seem to remember that there were 3 different ways the samsung drives could be configed for Master, Slave and Cable Select..One for drives under 32 GB and 2 for drives over 32GB...I think one of the over 32GB options worked for newer controllers and one worked for older controllers..you might want to try them booth...the one that works on your pc might give the TIVO fits

I found the following link which should help you out...

I'm using a the Samsung and the Maxtor 120 gig 5400 drives side by side right now.

Both are working beautifully.

The Samsung was dirt cheap at Esystore.com - 125 bucks w/no tax and free shipping.

Since I don't have either I really shouldn't comment, but...

Everything I read about the 4R120L0 is very good. Very quiet and VERY, VERY cool. I have one on order from www.drives-4-less.com for $141 with shipping. I haven't received it yet, due in on Thursday. I'm also not sure what I'm going to do with it either, since I just upgraded my HDVR2 with a Seagate, and my DSR6000 with a Maxtor 540DX. I may drop it into the DSR6000 as a second drive, or I may keep it as a spare.

Thanks for the input! I ordered the Samsung from Zeehoo.com for $131.76 after tax and shipping! Thanks for the Pricewatch tip, Nabsltd. I saved about 20 bucks!

I am using that Samsung SV1204H, very cool and quiet. Seems like a good drive to me.

I've tried every jumper combination I can think of, none of which work. I even tried the 32GB one.

What I was thinking of doing was maybe doing a tradeout with someone on this board or elsewhere. There's nothing wrong with the drive, so perhaps swapping it with someone's Maxtor or something. Any takers? :)
