"Married by America" (upcoming Fox show)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm presuming a few of you caught the promos for this (they aired during that Joe Millionaire snoozefest). I'm pretty openminded, but this really does seem like the bottom of the barrel: contestants marry each other, sight unseen, based on an audience vote. Cameras then film their interaction.

Wonder what the "pro-marriage and family values" crowd will make of this.

Posted by: pmyers

This might even be too much for me...nah....I'm sure I'll be hooked ;)

Posted by: Romalin

I look at it this way...all reality shows are the bottom of the barrel.

And hell, if I can make a vote to watch two bafoons make an ass out of themselves and ruin their lives, I'm all for it.

Posted by: Skittles

If America is voting, things could get interesting.....I suspect that people are going to pick the most volatile pair a few times, just to see some fireworks.

Posted by: jradosh

Like 'Joe Millionaire', I'm just not interested in this kind of 'reality' show.

Posted by: tanstaafl

Ha. You think Married by America is bottom of the barrel? NBC has announced Who Wants to Marry My Mom.

For true weirdness, try this one too!

Posted by: MaryT

After Joe Millionaire, I absolutely refuse to watch any new reality program on Fox... what a waste of time.

Posted by: Vox Acerbus

notice that the profile of the bride in this commercial has pretty much a "darva conger nose"...

Posted by: rich

During last night's Michael Jackson rebuttal show on Fox ... they showed a promo for this series. It started off with the butler from Joe Millionaire sitting in his chair by the fireplace with his glass of brandy. He said that when Evan chose a bride, the only one who was doing the choosing was Evan, with some help from the butler. But now, on Married by America, it's all up to America!! At the end, he wondered aloud whether the new couple would be needing a good butler. Good stuff.

Well I guess the good news is that they won't have to wait till they're married to have sex...

Posted by: wkeahey

Am I the only one who watched this or just the only one to admit it? I thought it was very funny, I have to say I did not take it very serious though. I would like to know how it rated last night since there doesn't seem to be much interest maybe I was the only one watching.

Posted by: jsmeeker

Watched it.. Boring. very slow. Hopefully, it will pick up and get interesting.

FWIW, I think that Jennifer is pretty hot.

Posted by: Skittles

I agree. Boring, slow, and very unappealing.

Posted by: rich

Watched it ... it was sort of funny. I laughed when one of the brides-to-be said that she hadn't met the right guy yet because "the guys I've met didn't understand me", as if someone she's never even met will really understand her! :p

How about Jill's dad running his finger along the page as he read the first question: "Jill likes cats, do you like cats?" , then rejecting the first guy because his clothes "weren't modern enough"?

This is a weird show but it'll be interesting to see where it leads.

Good, I'm on reality TV overload right now and I'd hate to hear that this was some great show.

I wish the networks would go with the quality over quantity approach to reality TV shows. Some really poorly done reality shows have been created lately.

Posted by: Fustanella

Absolutely no interest whatsoever in "reality" shows, thanks. I prefer real reality to someone else's opinion. ;)

Posted by: thehepcat

Yeah, this was pretty painful to watch. I've already deleted Wednesday's episode from the To Do list.

However, Monday's is staying put. I'm likening it to fast forwarding through a Neckcar race to watch the crashes.

Tonight is the big night when we find out who has been paired up by America.

Calling it "Married by America" is a bit misleading though. It's really more like "Engaged by America" because that's all that's going to happen tonight. Over the next several weeks the couples will live together and get to know each other as we watch. Maybe some actual marriages will ensue. Who knows. Will there be a future vote on whether each engaged couple should actually go ahead and tie the knot?

Posted by: Skittles

I may watch tonight's episode, to see how the deal with the woman that's already married.

I beg to freakin differ

Posted by: rich

Without spoiling too much, last night the five couples were paired up, and all five accepted their proposals. The already-married one's secret was exposed but they said she would have lost anyway.

Next the five couples each have to drive eight hours to the ranch where they will be staying. (To let them get to know each other and to see how they handle being in a car together for eight hours.) They will live together for the next five weeks and apparently each week America will have a chance to vote the least compatible couple out of the ranch. (Will their engagement then be off? It wasn't clear.) At the end of the five weeks, one couple will remain and they will get married and will get some prizes, and if they stay married for a while they will get more prizes.

The rules on this show aren't too clear; maybe more will be explained next week.

My question is if we voted real time last week, was the decision filmed the next day and all the preview footage occuring during this last week.

In fact now that I think about it they showed preview footage last week too I think. Something doesnt seem right!

Voting closed on Wednesday night, so the decision was probably filmed on Thursday so they would all have time to drive to the ranch and spend at least one night there by Monday.

I don't remember any preview footage of the ranch last week, but I think I do remember previews of proposals, so maybe some filming was done on Tuesday too (after the voting for the first set of three was finished).

Last night the five couples drove to the Ranch along the Pacific Coast Highway. Then they went on some dates and spent a few nights together. Some of the couples are pretty miserable and some are getting right into it. Later a panel of three judges (who had been watching everything) asked the couples some questions and then eliminated one couple. That couple had to turn in the engagement ring and leave the Ranch. It's actually pretty interesting IMHO. A lot of the background music from Joe Millionaire is getting recycled for this show.

Does that include the *gulp* and *slurp* sound effects? :D

There was one scene where they might have been used, but they were only heard, not subtitled.

So, which couple will be next to go?? I think it will be Jennifer from Atlanta and her European man.

I think you're right.

Local Fox affiliate in NC has decided this show is too trashy ("does not reflect prevailing standards of good taste") and is refusing to air it.

This is a great example of why the local exclusive rights crap should be tossed out. For them to have them to have an exclusive license they should either be required to play network feeds exactly as is and NEVER preempt even for local sports... or allow anybody to get a network waiver and pick up a network feed.

We nailed it. No big surprise there; they were miserable.

Next week the couples Meet the Folks. It looks like Jill's dad (Mr. "Jill likes cats, do you like cats?") goes ballistic over something. The other segments look like they will be interesting too. Denise's guy takes a page out of Ryan's book (from the Bachelorette) and asks her dad for permission to marry his daughter.

I think Jill and her guy will be the ultimate winners. I'm not sure who will be leaving next week though.

Posted by: rich

In last night's show, the couples went to "Meet the Folks".
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Stephen and Denise
were booted off. Next week the two remaining couples go to Las Vegas for wild Bachelor and Bachelorette parties, a la Temptation Island.

Jill's dad did indeed go ballistic, but not for what I thought he would. We did not see any of Jill's cats. Billie Jeane's friend Duane had a meltdown too.

I am enjoying this show, although I guess I am one of few according to the ratings. I have to say, though, that I will be very disappointed if the final couple does not get married. I am fed up with getting invested in the outcomes of these shows and then nothing ever coming of the romances. I know, I better get a life fast!

Posted by: kyote

And a totally worthless piece of trivia to throw in. I know one of the jib/camera operators for the show. They apparently filmed it in Carmel, CA (or at least that's what he told me) and it took place over 30 days. Just thought I'd throw that in there. I met him while we were filming a commercial north of Modesto, CA.

Last night the remaining four contestants partied in Las Vegas (at the Aladdin), then had to tell their fiances about it when they got back. They went shopping for gowns and tuxes.

Then they faced the panel again, but nobody was eliminated this time. America was given a chance to call in and vote for who they thought was the most compatible couple.

Next week, in the 2-hour finale, both couples walk down the aisle. If the couple that America selected actually gets married, they get big prizes.

However, from the previews, things go horribly wrong for at least one of the couples.

Posted by: ahartman

My wife and I have been trying to figure the last show out...

Do both couples get married and then only one gets the prize? So one couple is married and gets nothing?

OR

Do both couples walk down the aisle but only one gets to complete the ceremony?

I agree, it's confusing. I assumed that America would get a chance to vote and then the losers would be eliminated and the winners would have an opportunity to go through with it. But that's not how it looks from the previews. Apparently both have already walked down the aisle, and at least one of the ceremonies went badly. I presume that neither, one, or both couples will end up married, and then America's selection will be announced after the fact and prizes will be awarded if America's selection did actually get married.

I think that Jill and Kevin will be America's choice, and they will go through with it. I think that Tony is ready to run.

I agree with you. I've known girls like Billie Jeanne before....totally nuts...so Tony better watch his back if he decides to catch out.

I absolutely agree with you. I think Jill and Kevin will be America's choice, though I am not sure how lasting the relationship will be. There are some major issues involving both families chemistry and the whole covering for playboy.

We shall see...

I feel dirty. I just watched the last show and witnessed what was probably the most painful moment of these folks lives. I found it completely disturbing. Did anyone else watch tonight?

I watched it.

I didn't really expect the Jill/Kevin resolution, but I knew (and America knew) that Tony and Billie Jeane's relationship was in big trouble. If someone is standing at the altar and still wondering whether they love each other, then that should be a red flag.

It was painful, but I think it all worked out correctly.

If the show had given them more time to get to know each other, it might have been different (for Jill and Kevin at least). Also the people were never given a chance to gracefully bow out of the show. The only ways out of the engagement were to have the panel eliminate them or to say "I Don't" at the altar.

I totally agree. It was sickening. I felt heartless for having any part of it.

I watched. Most paniful moment in their lives?? Please. the whole idea and premise of the show wasto marry someone that you met on a TV show and set up by the American public. And the people they picked to be on the show couldn't even carry through on that. Give me a break. It's not like were were watching *real* couples get dumped at the altar.

Why do I allow myself to be scammed by shows like this? I should know better, especialyl for shows like this that appear on Fox.

The only ones who really seemed to be hurt were Billie Jeane and her entourage. She had her hopes up really high, even though Tony kept trying to tell her that he was having problems with the situation. Jill, Kevin and Tony and their friends/family all seemed to be satisfied with the outcome.

he told her to her face a day or two before (right before he moved to a different location) that he didn't want to get married. Of course, he's got to jilt her at the alter. Makes for better TV that way.

Posted by: rich

I'm surprised that the topic of the half-a-million dollars was never discussed by the couples in the lead-up to the wedding day. Do you think they were aware of it? In Jill and Kevin's case, the half-a-mill would have gone a long way toward making the "what will Kevin do for a job?" question moot.
