I saw a post on this or another forum a while back in which someone mentioned a some type of adapter they put in a bay of their computer so that they can swap their TIVO drive in and out easily. does anyone know anything of this or have a suggestion of what to use?

A number of slide-in tray systems exist that sit in a bay of a PC and allow IDE devices to be plugged in from the front. They do require that the HD be mounted on one of their trays which provides the power and IDE cables to fit into the HD.
The effort of putting the disk onto and off of the adapter tray is not much less than just opening the PC cover. Furthermore, unless you expect to be doing TiVo upgrades very very frequently the time you spend putting in the system for pluggable drives is probably not worth the return.
Just my opinion -- you may like the system. I used that system with a prior PC and didn't use it anywhere near as much as I thought I would.
Good news -- not that expensive.
