Smallville 2/18: Fever (SPOILERS)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: David Platt

I'm not going to post any actual spoilers, but what great acting by Chloe in this episode. That was one truly great scene.

A great episode over-all, and so many surprises!!

Posted by: Graymalkin

They're really start to mess with the mythology now. When Clark becomes Superman, who isn't going to be suspicious?
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

And if Martha gives birth to a little girl, what do you bet they name her Linda Lee or Kara?

Posted by: JYoung

Oh boy,
wasn't that scene with Chloe pouring her heart out to unconscious Clark and him mumbling "Lana" a real knife through the heart. Ouch!

Posted by: holee

I think Mrs. Kent gets the award for dumbest character this season.

I just couldn't follow her weird dumbo-verse logic in why she did what she did.

This was followed by the other two Kents. I mean, hello, giant glowing thing in the middle of a hospital parking lot.

And Lex seemed AWFULLY unconcerned considering his best friend and best friend's mom was at death's door.

The Chloe stuff was good. Dialogue was a little corney, but good.

But man, the advertising at the end for the soundtrack. Wasn't that just a little too obvious? Pete giving it Clark??

Posted by: pyrite504

Did they actually try to peddle that CD at the end?

I fast forward past those "listen to this" commercials, so I missed it.

Bonus for Chloe. They're finally having some snapback on the nosey as hell girl. <She's my favorite character on the show, however.> Lana should have given the letter to Clark.

Posted by: BrettStah

I don't think Lex knew Clark was sick. He did ask about Mrs. Kent's condition a few times, and on one level I think he is sincere about it...

Posted by: Philosofy

Well, the doctor knows something's weird with Clark. How long before Lex finds out?

Chloe is the best actor on the show right now. I'm really hoping for a series finale that ends with Chloe getting an internship at the planet, and Perry White telling her "Chloe Sullivan isn't a good name for a reporter. Change it to something else. How about Lois Lane?"

Next week: Christopher Reeve as Steven Hawking? Woo HOO!

Posted by: Bill N

i think i read on another board that it's been said by the producers that lois lane is chloe's cousin who is a few years older.....(maybe college age)

Posted by: Thom

What jumped out at me, Lana couldn't make herself go visit Clark while he was sick, but Chloe was more insistent about being let in to see Clark. Lana is attracted to Clark, but Chloe is the one who has genuine depth of feelings for him. And him saying Lana's name was a real unexpected sucker punch!

Lex, on the other hand, is a person who doesn't feel for anyone else. He's smart enough to know that he's lacking something, and he tries to feel something, but it just isn't there. Thus, on any significant choice between himself and anyone else, they lose. Including Clark, when it comes time.

- Thom

Posted by: hckylvr88

I thought it was interesting that suddenly Lex is inviting the doctor to move into the mansion. Genuine interest in the woman, or a need to keep a source of information about the Kents close at hand?

Is it just me or are any of you wondering why the episode has a hole big enough to drive an 18-wheeler through?

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

The same spaceship that obliviates green kryptonite from outside the hospital, a block away AND manages to save Clark, while he's wearing Lana's necklace (earlier episode) cant remove the kryptonite from the ground it's nearly sitting on?

Yeesh. Good acting, bad script.

I gave up trying to rationalize the plot holes in this series long ago! ;)

I love how there are never any repercussions for breaking the law in the world of Smallville: Jonathan can break into a government institution and steal something, yet everything is hunky dory at the end of the episode.

Posted by: kyote

Tell me about it. I may be a guy but I was just about to scream at the tv. Clark needs a good throttleing about the head and shoulders area. What does he see in her? Sure she's cute, but Chloe is so much better, IMHO.

If there are any repercussions then Lex and his money/devious threatening or sudden death of the guy/gal causing the trouble will clear that mess up.

Sorry gents, but give me Lana. She is the much cuter one to me.

Posted by: Fleegle

I think we saw the begining of Lex's fall to the dark side in this episode. This is the forst time we've had a hint that he actually loves someone. I think this is a first for him.

Now, we all know that the adult Lex Luthor is single, without any emotional attachments. I see something happening to either the doctor or their relationship before the series ends. Lex, trying to be the good person she wants him to be, will do something or doesn't want to do, or vice versa, and either the doctor will die, or she will decide to never see him again as a result. Lex decides that doing The Right Thing will only cuase him pain.

Great episode.

Holee, you've got to be kidding me. You're actually complaining because you think Jonathan and Clark were foolish for lighting up the spaceship in the parking lot?

The man's at the end of his rope. John Schneider did a great job (more on him in a bit) showing that he's got no other options. He's about to lose his wife, his son and his baby. You think he cares about keeping the ship a secret if there's any chance in the world that it would save them? No way. I'm surprised they didn't haul the thing up to her room and turn it on.

Now, if you want to question the fortune that no one was in the parking lot to see it, go ahead. ;)

jhausmann, your "plot hole" doesn't necessarily have to be one. It's been established that the ship has some kind of intelligence working in it. It knew to save Clark from Lana's necklace. Just because it emits an anti-kryptonite beam on the necklace doesn't mean that it would necessarily render all the kryptonite in the area safe as well. It could have, but it's not something that it *should* have done, thus creating a plot hole.

How about the 180 for Jonathan! :D I've been complaining that he's been nothing but sour grapes and now we get a show where he gets to pull hero duty. Very cool. John Schneider did a fantastic job in this episode. When he dropped the line about Martha not making it through the night, I was floored. Great delivery.

To be honest, I was uncertain that she would live. I assumed, but you just never know. Then I remembered this isn't Buffy. Main characters don't die here. ;)

Thank God the baby survived. I don't think I could have handled it otherwise.

I wonder what, exactly, the doctor knows...

I'm liking Pete more, after a rough start to this season.

The "Talon Mix" was inexcusable. That borders on the Wayne's World product placement scene.

Smallville is continuing to knock them out of the park, as far as I'm concerned. Sure, too many people know too much. That's really my only complaint. But they'll all die at some point. ;)

Next week looks to be great.

And Gray, wouldn't that be something? A brand new Supergirl origin! :D

Posted by: sschwart

I'm getting really tired of the Lana/Clark/Chloe triangle. They just keep re-hashing the damn thing over and over. Isn't Lana still pissed at Clark for kissing Chloe?

The episode was good, I just am getting tired of rehashing the same thing. Let's go in a new direction with this... Have Chloe find a guy and have Clark be jealous and realize how much he likes Chloe, or have Lana or Chloe get over Clark. They're teenages, it's not like they're not going to be attracted to other guys. And what about Pete? Doesn't he get a girlfriend?

Are you kidding? Pete's the player.

At every dance, or social event he's always got a different girl.

Pete's doin' okay, don't worry about him. ;)

We did get a new piece to the triangle this week, by Lana discovering how Chloe feels about Clark. She didn't seem to care too much, at least she didn't seem to choose to back away from Clark.

We'll see how that develops.

Posted by: Philosofy

This week gave the triangle a new twist. In past episodes, Clark stayed away because of Whitney, either he was away, or because he was dead. Then he goes for it, and Lana gets pissed at him. Lana's just about to forgive him and go for it herself, then finds her best friend loves Clark even more. It wouldn't surprise me to have Lana push Clark towards Chloe in future episodes, but Clark will still want Lana.

Of course, in the comics Pete and Lana ended up together...

That would be awesome...

Yeah, but that kind of story line doesn't necessarily affect Smallville.

If it did, Pete's going to have to have a Michael Jackson type skin transformation sometime in the future. :D

But make absolutely no sense.

I wonder if there will be a situation with Lana pushing Clark to Chloe or if Chloe and Lana will basically get into a "fight" and Chloe will tell Lana how she really feels about her. To be honest, I was hoping the rift between Lana and Clark had been set and hardened in the past couple episodes. I hope Lana will push Clark to Chloe, but if that were her intent, why would she tell Clark how affected Chloe was when he was sick, and then add on that she was affected as well.

I also wonder if the baby might end up being the catalyst for a spinoff on Smallville. There was talk a couple weeks ago aboput Warner Brothers not wanting Smallville disturbing the storyline for the movie that may or may not ever be produced. Perhaps the child is a way to keep things going.

I know, I do a lot of speculation. But hey...ya never know. It could happen.

I'm wondering why the three of them just don't move in together and quit worrying about who gets who. Everyone could have everyone! Clark could come home to the two of them and then...

Whoops, sorry.. a little bit of my own personal fantasy just snuck out.

A couple things:

In regards to leaving the kryptonite in the ground... I wasn't aware that kryptonite was under there. Maybe in the past, but what came up was not a green glow when Martha was digging, but a green spore cloud. I got the impression that for some reason or another, the spores were mutated there. Either from previous exposure to kryptonite, or lingering radiation from the ship as it sat there, but if there was kryptonite there now, Clark would feel it every time he entered that room. Remember, only lead (or, I imagine, other substances just as dense) stops the radiation.

It'll be interesting to see if the child does indeed survive. Clark having a brother or sister will most definitely be a BIG break from the standard history of the character. I don't think I'd be surprised either way now if the child doesn't survive, or survives and is a girl named Linda. If the girl had super powers, then it wouldn't be Jonathon's daugher, it would be a result of the ship impregnating Martha (that's kinda twisted, if you ask me). If the ship just healed Martha enabling them to have a kid, then the kid would be normal. Or at least as normal as anybody else in Smallville. Hmmmm, maybe the kid will have super powers like some of those other supervillains because of Kryptonite exposure. Interesting.

If they name the girl Kara, maybe it'll be because Martha has the birth at home, and the kid is hypoglycemic or something, and they have to give her corn syrup to get her blood sugar up, so that's the name that comes to mind. :D

Posted by: Graymalkin

I was thinking more along the lines that the spaceship may have caused a mutation in Martha's baby, which would make him/her a metahuman.

So if a bald guy in a wheelchair shows up one day... :D

Posted by: TiVaholic

bobcarn, when they first showed a shot of where Martha was going to bury the flour, it had cans that said "Lead" on them. She buried it there so Clark couldn't X-ray it. Of course, I agree in the thinking that it wasn't kryptonite.

*DURING* the show. Clark goes up to Pete, who's apparently a Deejay. And Pete hands him the Talon Mix, which is the album they are now selling at your local record store (in real life). And Clark thanks him for it.

There's a nice shot of the CD itself, where they pause just to show you the silk screen.

Tres tacky.

Posted by: kyote

I loved that! Professional CD cover design. Pete hands the cd to Clark, the camera pauses and they both hold it for the camera for a full second or two before Clark finally takes and it BINGO, Clark does his trademark smile. It was priceless. Next we need the Talon to give a Pontiac Outback to the 10,000th customer or something. :)

They already dropped the new Beetle Convertible in there this week...

Posted by: TiVoJedi

Speaking of cars.. how is it that Pete has a new car every week? I thought his family were ruined corn farmers swindled by the Luthors. Did I miss something last season that explained how these kids drive around in fancy cars? I can understand Lex having a new car everytime, but the other kids? This isn't the X-Files were Mulder and Scully were driving around in some new rental car week after week.

Posted by: JYoung

I think in Nocturne, they said that Pete's father or mother was a Judge as they signed the court order to take the kid away. Judge implies lawyer so there may be some money from that.
Pete started out this year in an old Ford convertible, IIRC. He switched to the red mid to late 80's red Camaro which got blown up. I'm guessing the insurance bought him the blue Camaro we saw the following week.
How Chloe afforded the Beatle has not been explained but is not uncommon on television. I remember watching Roswell and noticing that Sherif Valenti's high school son Kyle drove around in a brand new Mustang GT convertible.

Who needs Clark? I think a spin-off series called "Chloe and Lana" would do just fine. :D

The Talon CD plug was indeed tacky.

But I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the Gateway box Clark was carrying when he entered the Talon...

No, that's no different than someone drinking from a Coke bottle.

It's not as if they started the shot on the "Gateway" label and zoomed out to the rest of the gang.

Regular product placement has a place and is acceptable. Cheesy merchandising like the Talon CD is different and inexcusable.

At least they didn't milk it. Chloe mentioned that the prize for the raffle was "a computer". Had she said "a Gateway computer" it would be a bit more suspect. Otherwise I've got no problem with it.

And, not that anyone asked, I'd take Chloe over Lana any day.

Posted by: kyote

I don't consider it much different then the Mac that was in Seinfeld's apartment. It's sort of like a "real world item" and not a blatant marketing ploy.

"Thelma and Louise: The Smallville Years" :D

Posted by: TiVoLance

I for one will chime in that I think Chloe is the best actor in the show so far (or just maybe has the best writing). I thought her speech to Clark was very touching and really felt bad for her as Clark mumbled Lana's name. Chloe may not be the popular cheerleader type that Lana is but she would be a good match for the future Superman :D

I was surprised it was a Gateway. Considering that the computers at the Torch are all iMacs, I would have expected an Apple. (And haven't we seen Chloe with a laptop at some point?)

Then again, Lex always uses an unidentifiable PC.

oooo, could this be a good guy/bad guy clue ala 24?

Lex used a Titanium Powerbook last year. I believe they changed it so the show matches the action figure (which comes with a generic laptop emblazoned with the 'Luthorcorp' logo).

That's funny.

Lex Luthor, with computing power!

I wonder if the Gateway box was not actually product placement...just using the most recognizable computer box in America.

Could be, but he did carry it in with the name pointing right at the camera.

Personally the pattern would have been enough for me, but someone made sure the name was sticking out.

Posted by: ClutchBrake

I didn't think too hard about it when he walked in carrying it. I actually thought he was probably delivering some of his mom's vegetables in it.
The fact that Chloe brushed Clark off later in the show so she could register to win the computer made it OK with me. After all, with the exception of Gateway and Dell I doubt there are many computer manufacturers joe six-pack would recognize. Chloe could have made the comment without us seeing the box though. The only real problem I had with it was that it was Gateway and not Dell.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

The reason I doubt it was paid product placement is that they wouldn't really have gotten their money's worth. They would have at least shown clearly the Gateway name, and probably she would have taken it out of the box and said, "Ooh, a Gateway! I hear they're number 1 in customer satisfaction," or some such.

I, too, at first thought it was just a box to carry stuff in, but I DID think it was odd they would use a computer box.

Do you think the ship's light ray ended up curing everyone in the hospital? That was a pretty wide dispersal...:)
