Series 2 or Older Unit

Well - got feedup with DirecTV and cancled my subscription. Now I have no Tivo - made the mistake and went to the darkside -- ReplayTV. Well I see the light and the Replay is going to be making a trip to the BestBuy return counter. Replay had lots of nice features but to many bugs for me to handle.
My question is should I go with the new series 2 or one of the old 212 tivos? The only advantage I see in the series 2 is the home media option. Does anyone know if that functionality be offered on the older models in the future? I can find older ones cheap and upgrade them and add ethernet but not sure if I am shorting myself of anything.

Well I can definately tell you that any Series 1 will not be capable of HMO. It is still up in the air whether Series 1 will receive any future enhancing sofware updates. But if you are at all interested in the HMO, I'd get a Series 2.

It's well documented here that TiVo will never offer HMO to Series 1 users. What was so bad about DTV - did you have a combo unit? Most combo owners here would rather gnaw off their right hand than give them up.

I've had issues with their protection plan and my feeling of a lack of customer focus. Plus they don't offer locals in HDTV, hardly anything in dolby digital and digital cable was cheaper.

If you are really interested in HMO, then get the Series 2. I personally am not, but I have a Series 2, just because my Series 1 is getting old and the Good Guys Warranty is almost over. If you don't care about the HMO options, then stick with a Series 1, plus you can hack the series 1 to do a lot of the stuff HMO is going to give you.... hmmmm
