As recommeded by Sky... its still there !!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Since 2.5.5 Tivo removed the "As recommended by Sky" from all the Screen pages..... except one!
OK I am probably the last person to notice this, but there is one screen that still shows this old recommendation even though its for only about 2 seconds...
It is at the very end of the Tivo animation video that you get when you first power up Tivo... look carefully and you will see it. Clearly they couldn't be bothered to redo the video!! :D :D
Anyone else know of anywhere else they have left it behind?

Yes I had noticed that, changing the animation presumably would involve a much bigger download than just the 2.5.5 update
Posted by: Automan
Yes, the animation is the original complete with audio wow to make you think your box is sick when it's not...
P.S.
I think it also includes the original US colors for the menus.

I don't think it's so much to do with the size of the download as the cost involved in reworking and re-rendering the animation just to remove that reference, especially since it's only visible for a couple of seconds during boot-up.

Ya know, I have always wondered about that. I thought it was me :)

That audio wow is NOT in the original animation - it's caused by something else the TiVo is doing at the time.
(Evidenced on my TiVo by the fact that it moves from place to place according to mood.) :-)

Geez you lot are slow - this news is over a year old!!!
Not convinced the wow changes Bignoise but then I can't say I've studied it!

Hmmm .... great signature Gary... but is there really any point in
http://www.tivosuggestions.co.uk - Suggest new features to add to TiVo.
as I somehow feel there will never be a release made available to add any of the suggestions to our Tivo's??
I think Tivo have taken the software as far as they are going to for series 1 players.
As for any future release players... I think they already know what they need to do..
Just a thought...

The wow does move. To prove it all you have to do is find an evening where there's nothing on, and TiVo isn't recording anything, and you're bored out of your mind, and your girlfriend's away, and you've seen all the DVDs a hundred times, and you read a thread on a forum which makes you want to reset your TiVo. Twice.

I just tried the TiVo DVD and the TiVo animation on that does not have the WOW. Would be good to digitally copy it onto the TiVo but that would break the forum rules!

I recall TiVo Ted did confirm the recording had a problem but it was not worth fixing or replacing with a new one minus the "As recommended" message.
The wow occurs as the menu image is changing from USA to UK colors.

Break a rule, also Bakdraft, you will also find out the intro movie that you could also start by pressing tivo and zero has also been disabled so people see the "recommended by SKY" as little as possible..
Happy holidays

Yeah.. I was sadly aware that they had removed it from zero... but it had never occured to me that that might have been the reason why..

I am sure if Sky had there way, they would of made TiVo Blur out the "recommended by Sky" like on jackass when they are blocking out a face. Or force a new movie downloads over a modem for a call lasting 20 Hours, never mind. I wonder when they start targettng people like me with a lifetime Tivo and a Sky subscription.
I have already had reports of some people(not necessary tivo owners) who have sky subs being offerered Sky + on a 6 week trial, installed free pay after 6 weeks or they come and collect your plus box.
Anyone been offered a sky incentive??

I can hear the wow very clearly, I was wondering if its actully in the origional, as it seems to do it at the same spot EVERY time.
Maybe I'll make a small audio sample of it :)
Now thats serious hobbyism (is that a word?) for you!
Posted by: GarySargent
Maybe we could hack it so it says "Recommended by Sky+" :D
Posted by: Paj
OK, I may as well accept that I have no life:
tivowow.mp3
One version with an early wow, one in the middle and one so late you can barely hear it.

Welcome to the club Paj :D
Most odd - I always assumed it was the same place. Can anyone remember if TiVo+0 also had the wow?

What do you mean by "Audio Wow"?
All I can hear, is a symbol, or something similar, is that what you mean?
Posted by: 6022tivo
No it is when the audio wobbles, I believe it is when the tivo is doing something else in the background and the picture audio slows down and speeds up a bit, you sometimes catch this whilst forwarding then playing when music is on the tivo, I can only presume the tivo is doing something and the introscreen slows/speeds up for a fraction of a second.

The wow in the first example is 2.5 seconds in. You might think it is part of the tune (I did at first!).
That trumpet synth is supposed to play 7 notes, but it sounds like it plays 9.

The tivo-0 shortcut was removed from all tivos worldwide, from software 2.x onwards. There were just as many complaints from US users as from UK users. I'm sure it was not done just because of Sky in the UK.
The "wow" has always annoyed me, my tivo did boot up once without doing it at all but these days I have other hacks of my own which are started at bootup (bash, ftp, ppp) so I forgive it.

What a load of pants, the US TiVo + Zero is alive and well, see Tips and tricks
http://www.tivo.com/4.4.asp
Kids can have a ball!
Press the TiVo button followed by the number zero for a colorful surprise.
This tip was also on the UK site for months before complaints and tivo uk remove it..
It was a sky thing as Sky definitely recommend Sky + at the moment..
Posted by: mrtickle
No. If the instructions were removed from the UK site it's because tehy stopped working in 2.5.5 - because the feature was removed.
If it works on US tivos they must have put it back in 3.x. The feature was removed in all 2.x versions worldwide. And not at Sky's request.

I remember it being discussed at the first! User group meeting. Normal playback of programmes used to do it quite a lot and they'd just put out a fix (or were about to - I can't remember which) to correct this. It was commented that it was still on the animation "because it was on the original recording"
Posted by: mrtickle
Well that's not true, it's not on the original recording! :)
I have a reproducable way to play it without the distortion. You need a bash prompt.
When tivo reboots, it plays the animation as soon as it can. If it was in standby when it rebooted, it plays the animation as soon as you bring it out of standby - which can be long after the reboot, with everything fully started up and less stress on the disc!
So, put the tivo into standby. Type "reboot" at a bash prompt. Let it reboot, give it a few minutes. Then press "TiVo" on the remote control. HTH

Or pull the plug after standby maybe?
