American Idol - 2/25 & 2/26 - SPOILERS!!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jsmeeker

Just finsiehd watching.. Surprised I am startign this thread.

Anyway, the Marine guy did great. Fanastic. All judges loved him. Last guy was great too. He was one who partied that one night during the big cut-down round. He certainly redeemed himself tonight.

The blonde girl.. Man, she's HOT! (but only 17!!). Too bad she didn't sing well.

Loved watching the one girl yell at Simon and Randy, asking them "Who are you? Who are *you*? You don't know what you are talking about." Then saying "I'm [whateverhername is]. I've made it to this far in this competition!" Great stuff

Posted by: Turtleboy

The funny thing is that Juanita was Frenchie's replacement. She was only there b/c Frenchie got Da boot.

And she sucked.

And was an ass.

I'm getting a little tired of these "singers" with a big attitude problems during the auditions. It's getting kind of ridiculous and they aren't doing themselves any favors...

Posted by: GoodN

Just a few minutes into the show (West Coast) and I'm getting bored. Watching the contestants go after Simon is really sad, and having the family members come over after the performances is silly. (Until one of them gets up and starts a fight with Simon) I really enjoyed the talent in last year's competition, but this group doesn't get me excited.

Posted by: Marc

Can someone explain what's up with everyone wearing star necklaces?

Even Paula Abdul's got one.

--Marc

Posted by: DLiquid

I thought everyone pretty much sucked. The last guy was pretty good, I guess, especially when compared with others from this show. The dude with cornrows was okay too, but nothing special. The marine guy didn't impress me at all. He sang okay, but I don't think he has what it takes to be famous. No way. It seemed to me they were complementing him because he was a marine, not because he sang well. It seemed like a lot of people were off key tonight, especially Juanita. I think Charles or Reuben from previous episodes would blow away anyone from this group.

Posted by: NatasNJ

What is wrong with people? How can ANYONE like Corey (aka Last guy)? He was horrible. His voice sounds like a high pitched girl. Please... No idea what the judges and people saw in him..

Marine guy was only good performer last night. I just wish when he asked if he was called to duty he answered better. All he should of said was "I am a Marine first and foremost." or " The marines are my #1 priority!" Other than the crap he mumbled a few times. Anyway..

I completely agree!! I don't know what the judges were thinking when they said he was fantastic. I thought he was off-key. Actually I thought all of the singers, except the Marines guy were off-key.
OMG, I wanted to slap the ones with the attitude problems. If you have an attitude, you shouldn't be an American Idol.

Posted by: TomK

My vote is for the marine and ummm, err, oh heck...do they have to take two? :)

I saw on Oprah (my wife had it on...i swear) that Paula Abdul gave the little star necklace to all of the contestants that made it this far...kinda like a good luck charm and congratulations.

Nobody was great last night. The marine guy, the last guy, and the one with the sweater had pretty good voices. And the attitude problem is getting worse and worse. They saw a few people at the beginning weeks talking back to the judges and now almost everyone does it if they get negative feedback. The contestants look ridiculous and no one will ever want to hire them with that attitude. If one day they're recording a song in the studio and the producer says 'we need to do another take - the first wasn't good enough,' are they going to mouth off to the producer too? They will not last long in the business (if they make it at all) the way they behave. The worst part is that most of them were terrible last night and they don't even realize it. Another problem is that the parents and family are there 'supporting' their own, telling them how wonderful they did. Forget what the judges say - I'm a great singer because my mommy says so.

I agree too. It was painful. He WAS off key. Has Paula gone deaf?? He was awful. I thought he was awful in EVERY appearance I've seen him in. Is there a cone of silence around the judges?? :)

I could not believe how bad some of the singing was. Song selection stinks, for the most part.

Josh was the only one that was any good, and even he was a bit.

Posted by: Skittles

I liked the marine guy. Everyone else was so bad, it hurt to listen to them. In particular, the Michael Jackson look/sound alike was off-key way too much.

I think Simon was right last week. The wildcard group will blow these people away.

Posted by: bigcb37

How does the wild card work? Do the judges just pick 2 people to go into the final 10 or do they pick another 8 and America votes on the best 2 or do the judges decide on the 8 without America's votes?

I didnt watch last year so I'm not really sure how it works...

Posted by: tonyoci

I agree with the majority here, I though the Marine was pretty good but that Corey was not so good. The arguing with the judges gets on my nerves especially since, usually, Simon and Randy say the same thing and yet they only, usually, argue with Simon. Paula's talking over the top of Simon's comments is also getting frustrating. However Simon does bring it on himself, his comments are right but if he chooses to be as mean as he is then he gets what he deserves. I like it but he does deserve the critiscm.

I cannot pick two from last night. I suspect the voters (a poll showed the majority of voters are younger females) will probably vote Marine and Corey through.

In the wild card round last year the judges picked who went through but I seem to remember they only had to pick one, I have no idea this year if they will pick both or if they will pick one and the public pick the other.

Corey's performance stunk, but you wouldn't know that by listening to the judges. His performance ranked like a 4 or 5, and their responses were more appropriate for, like a 8 or 9.

They're clearly trying to steer the voting in Corey's direction. Why? I think it's because the show is trying to compensate for virtually singling him out, during the editing process, as the group's Bad Boy. They did the same with Julia DaMato -- portrayed her as a total b!tch, then redeemed themselves by overly commending her next performance. In her case, however, it wasn't so obviously manipulative because her performance was good; Corey's just plain s@cked.

Posted by: vman

I'm in general agreement with the group -- Marine guy good, everyone else (including last guy) not good. I think Paula is still in love with that guy for singing to her when he forgot the lyrics.

I think that part of the problem regarding arguing with Simon is that Randy and Paula egg them on when they do it, which the others see and then they need to argue too to show they have "personality." Even Simon often congratulates people for standing up to him.

They obviously encourage this because it makes for good TV. It's the same reason why Simon's criticisms are so harsh, because it's more entertaining that way. What the contestants don't seem to realize is that the joke is on them. Simon is sitting there just dissing them right to their face, and then they pipe up with something like, "I disagree." Well duh, of course you disagree, he's telling you that you suck! Juanita was hilarious with the "No, who are you?" comments. I can tell you all this humiliating confrontation is what got me hooked on the show. It's not like I enjoy watching them sing, at least not 95% of them.

Posted by: justapixel

I guess I can't add anything to this thread, except to say that I thought the marine was really, REALLY good.

The rest sucked, and when Randy and Paula stood up after Corey's performance, I was shocked. Maybe they just want him because of his look - he really has Idol-type looks. In fact, he looks a lot like Justin from last year.

There was a girl from my town singing last night - he was awful. Wanted to root, but couldn't. She sang the Whitney Houston song and backtalked the judges too.

Really?? Then *you* must know who *she* is.

:D

But what about the children???

Posted by: Todd

Was she saying she should have gotten a good review because she was singing about the children?? What a moron....

Posted by: marksman

I agree with TomK.

The Marine fellow gave an excellent performance. One that made me took notice. One that actually made me remember what a singer sounded like. Hearing all these people sing, it becomes easy to forget what someone who can sing sounds like.

Same kind of process happened last year too. I don't even remember Kelly Clarkson until the round of 10 began. But then in her first or second performance she just sung a song that really caught my attention and never stopped from there on out.

I know the judges like to tout how this top 10 will be so much better than last years. Last year only had 3 singers in the whole group. This year maybe the will have 5. But there are still some duds who will be getting through.

The last guy is one of those. I thought he might have been borderline up for the second spot, but honestly, nobody else did good, so he may be in by default.

Finally, this is the perfect show for TiVo.Watch the judge intros, fast forward until they roll tape on first singer. Stop ff in middle of tape, and in time to start singing. Watch singing, unless it is bad, then just ff to judges comments. If singer starts to mouth off ff to next singers intro tape.

I don't care what the contestants have to say, and I don't care what their families have to say. None of that stuff is the least bit relevant to their ability to sing or perform while on stage. I don't even think I could watch the show without TiVo.

What was up with Ryan Secrest's inside out t-shirt? Is that look in style these days?

Wild Card show next week!! Interesting that they are picking some people who did not make it to the final 32. And Simon promises a twist.

...and I have a really strong feeling as to what that twist might be:

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

Frenchie's back!! Notice how they only listed nine contestants instead of the usual even number? Just struck me as kind of odd. I've said from day one (alhtough I don't think I've ever mentioned it here) that the show's producers wer going to bring her back so they could look like the 'good guy.'

Posted by: TonyD79

Dplatt, I soooo hope you are right. I was chanting when Simon said there would be a twist.

BTW, I totally disagree with the comments here about Corey. I ran the song over again. He was off on ONE note (and that one was in one of those stupid runs they like them to do). The guy can sing.

Posted by: WinBear

I thought the twist for the wildcard show was interesting so far. Picking 4 or 5 people from the auditions to come back and make a run for it was certainly a twist, but probably well deserved after some of these dismal semifinal rounds.

I was glad to see they weren't going "boy/girl" each round just for balance. None of the women were worthy last night and America noticed.

Posted by: jsmeeker

Dplatt,

Not sure why you need to spoiler tag your guess. Anyway, I don't think your guess is right. I think the twist will have to do with the way the 2 wildcard people are selected. I don't know what, exactly.

Posted by: tonyoci

I thought tonights selections were the best available and I predicated Chip and the other girl for 3rd choice so seeing them in the wild card round was cool. I assume that Patrick got the "rocker" vote cause I cannot see how else he got into 3rd place.

I actually quite like Corey's personality but his voice is too high pitched for me.

If the judges are picking either of the wild card spots and Frenchie does not return (I doubt that also) then Kimberley Caldwell is an absolute lock so the fight is for the other one. Most of the rest of the selections are forgettable with the exception of our geeky friend Woody (not his real name but that's who he reminds me of).

I just went on the Idol site and apparently there will be 4 wildcards. I'm rooting for Clay and Kim.

I just wanted to err on the side of caution with the spoiler tags. I guess the "'Joe Millionaire' guess the twist" spoiler mentality is sitll hanging around. ;)

Posted by: jgickler

Did you notice that there were 2 males in the wildcard. I think AI is worried about the composition of the top ten or twelve. You have several large contestants, and only a couple of attractive females. It is also interesting how many of the wild cards were not in the original group of 32. It makes me wonder if the held back on us to liven up the show. What would be better then rooting for an underdog who didn't even make it into the original top 32.

My guess to the twist is that the top ten from last year will determine who one of the finalists is. If there are four, I think the judges will pick 1, last years finalists will pick one, and the other two will be phone ins.

Posted by: WinBear

Lots of twists this time. I wonder if the move to 12 finalists is an attempt to stretch the season into May sweeps without having to resort to additional clip shows?

This is one thought that crossed my mind, although I was thinking maybe they would used *current* finalists to do the voting.

Did anyone else notice that Seacrest totally screwed up and gave it away when he asked the judges if it was the first time that they all agreed and picked the winners?

And what was up with his comments on Simon using Botox? From what I have heard, Seacrest is the Botox addict who was told by the show to lay off since he was showing up with a frozen face.

"USA Beer Drinking Team" would have been better than "Beauty Qualifies Me." Should have worn the shirt the right way out. What Hollywood boutique is he shopping at - "Le Will Du Good" or "L'Armie Salvation?" What a tool!

Posted by: tonyoci

I don't think he gave it away, I think he was talking about how this was the first time they had all picked two people who actually made it to the final three.

Simon talked about the wild card show being the best show but I am not inspired by the group they are offering us, especially if we get to pick 4 of them out of 9

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I really didn't care for the Marine-guy's singing. Maybe it's just his style rather than the 'quality' of his voice that I don't care for. I guess he hit all the notes (I really don't know because I have absolutely no musical ability whatsoever). I just know what I like and I know that his performance wasn't it.

What do you all see in him?

J

PS. I do respect the fact that he's a Marine though :)

Posted by: tonyoci

I am not a huge fan of the Marine, he just was the best of a bad bunch this week (IMHO), he does put something into his singing which is lacking in many others.

T

Posted by: vman

I agree that the marine is not among my overall favorites, but in the group this week he stood out! I really don't know what the judges were thinking -- selecting 2 people from this group for the wild card round? Please! This seemed like the worst group by far.

Count me in that minority. I think if he was not a Marine, he'd be out. He doesn't really have "the look," all he looks like is a marine with a big ass chin. That might work in The Village People :D. IMO, there have been better singers than him that weren't voted through, such as wildcard Clay.

I totally agree, I thought this was the worst group. I was surprised when they said they were picking a wildcard from this group, then totally dumbfounded when they said they were picking two. Weird.

Posted by: Dafaso

I thought I read somewhere that there will be a celebrity judge joining them at one point - I think it was Stevie Wonder. Or did I dream this?

Posted by: tonyoci

You might be right but how can Stevie, with his obvious visual challenge, be valid to judge American Idol which is partly based on image.

There was a fourth judge who dropped out very early in the show.

T

Posted by: atreyu

I winced and groaned through Cory's entire performance, on *both* nights, and just about burst a blood vessel when Randy & Paula stood up to applaud him. He was singing a good 2 or 3 steps above his comfort range, making him sound strained and flat. He missed several notes and had no richness or fullness to his voice. The judges' gushing praise for him has to be "fixed."

I didn't think Josh the Marine was mind-blowing, but he was musically solid and delivered a relaxed, expressive performance. He got my vote.

I strongly disagree with the characterization of this week's show as the worst... I thought last week's show stunk to high-heaven. Notice there wasn't a single person from that show voted into the wildcard show?
