Bad news, Buffy fans...

As huge a fan as I am of most of the series, especially the first three seasons, I gotta say: no huge loss. I know lots here think this season is among the best but IMO it's merely better than last season, which isn't saying much. All the character dynamics are gone, the humor feels forced and contrived, and it seems to me like most of the cast were better actors when they were teenagers (well, playing teenagers, anyway). I don't see the writing being any better with Michelle or Eliza taking over the role.
I do hope Angel continues though.

They've been doing fine work this season. Might as well finish out on top.
Chris Carter marred my view of The X-FIles by stretching it to 9 seasons, where it really should have ended after 7. Hopefully Joss won't do the same.

I've been saying this, but always seem to get told I'm wrong. :)
Althought I do think Faith is a great character, I'd like to see her continue it.
This world is a lot bigger than the X-files.. they had 1 main conspiracy plot (which had contradictory changes during the 2nd half of the series, that just didn't make sense). I think Buffy has a lot more opportunity for different stories than Xfiles did.

Hopefully the Ripper show will work out as a spinoff. Assuming they are still planning on doing that.
Wouldn't mind seeing The First get its own spinoff too. LOL

I think Faith is a great character too, but that was years ago. At this point I have little...well, faith, in the writers ability to continue to make her an interesting character for any length of time. Maybe it isn't the writers fault - after all some of the same people were responsible for Firefly, excellent show that I was as sorry to see cancelled as anyone. Maybe the Buffy mythos has gone everywhere it can go, or maybe monster slaying is a young girls game, and late twenty/early-thirtysomethings just look silly doing it. I dunno. I'm just ready for the series to end.

I think a lot of people had problems with Season 6 and therefore haven't been as high on the show.
I think that the Jossverse still has a lot of good stories left in it though but they don't have to be told on Buffy.
I'd rather see Buffy leave on a (relatively) high note than become an X-File train wreck. They've done seven years and I'm ok with it ending.

Her departure also likely means "Buffy," at least in its current incarnation, will wrap in May, something that's also not much of a shocker, given the show's apocalyptic storylines this season.
Ok, when has the show NOT had an apocalyptic storyline? :)

Joss can now look after Angel and make sure it stays on course for a few more years.

I think the general reaction I have is what most people are feeling right now... basically, this was a foregone conclusion, yet it's still hard seeing it in black and white. It has a sort of... resigned finality to it.
Even when we expected it before, there was still a remote hope that maybe she'd reconsider and we'd get to put off the end (at least, the end of the current iteration) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for another season.
Like I just posted on Slashdot (who, by the way, is ALSO covering the end of Buffy) it's rather amazing how big a story this is. The ratings for the show haven't been all that great - but Buffy seems to be one of those shows where ratings can't begin to tell the story of how popular the show really is. The media obviously thought enough people cared about the show to make it a top headline for today. Hopefully this renewed attention will help the case for a spinoff-sequel-etc.

The only truly irritating part of this, with me thinking (even as a somewhat late comer to Buffy fan-dom) is that UPN screwed up royal by not going harder after getting Firefly, and using it to replace Buffy with next season.
Without SMG, I expect Buffy is done, and won't be continued. It has pretty much run it's course, and everything in the current story lines seems to indicate that things are going to end for the show.
Meanwhile, UPN has a barely limping along Trek series, and not much else to warrant the attention of repeatedly tuning in.
I know that Newscorp owns many of the stations in the UPN network (at least in some of the major markets) and they were supposedly leery of putting much more $$ into the network, but it seems very much to me that UPN is headed towards extinction pretty quickly.
If that happens, there's going to be a glut of independent stations joining an already crowded plate full of other providers that have *regularly scheduled* series which bring in viewers on an easy to determine basis.

Actually, I've thought for a few years now that one thing they could do in the future is a sortofa reverse Smallville: A series where Buffy is approaching middle age and having to juggle her responsibilities as a professional in the workplace, maybe also a soccer-mom, a wife, etc., with her responsibilities as the Slayer. I envision (some of) the same characters, but not the same actors. I think it could work if handled correctly.

/snip/
I don't think Firefly would've pulled in the number of female viewers that Buffy does. I know I couldn't get my wife to sit down and watch it with me, which is funny - she's perfectly happy at a Schwarzenegger movie, but once a space ship comes on screen, she loses all interest.
I was really enjoying Firefly too, but I don't think it could be a replacement for Buffy as far as ratings go.

BTW, Eliza Dushku has signed on to do a pilot for another show for the Fall season. So unless that pilot gets shot down really early, it will be nearly impossible for a Faith-centered show to be ready by this Fall, if at all.

I read the story about Eliza's new show. Hope it ends up doing well, as I think she is great to watch. I would have loved a "Faith the Vampire Slayer"
