Bruce Willis subs for Letterman on Late Show

Dave is not feeling well. He has some sort of inflamation around his eye. Tonight, IIRC, for the first time someone is guest hosting.

Some talking points:

Edit: The show just ended. Bruce seemed much more comfortable towards the end. Tom Arnold is scheduled as a guest tomorrow. Do you think Dave will give him the desk?

weak.

Thursday and Friday are going to be repeats, And he was scheduled to be off all next week anyway.

Actually, Dave had Regis Philbin guest hosting for him while he was out because of his surgery, so he's had at least one guest host before.

Surgery aside, it's the first time in 20 years he's called in sick.

Just a guess about why they didn't just show a repeat last night would be that guest were already in town and ready for the show as well as the audience.

The post-surgery shows weren't fully produced programs. I believe this is the first time they have tried to do a full broadcast with anyone other than Dave behind the center seat.

Definitely not true.

As originally found on CNN at this link:

Letterman was first sidelined from his show undergoing bypass heart surgery on January 14, 2000. CBS ran repeats of the show for the next three weeks, followed by a series of taped "Late Show Backstage" telecasts, with frequent guests showing clips of their favorite moments from the program.

Letterman returned part time on February 21 of that year, then alternated for a few weeks with a series of guest hosts, including Bill Cosby, Nathan Lane, and David Brenner, before coming back full time the week of March 27.

My bad. I had completely forgotten the "guest host" shows, although I am getting
brief flashbacks of the Vickie Lee nightmare. The fact they interspersed these shows with actual Letterman programs probably doesn't help my memory any. To make up for my mistake, here is the complete list from alt.fan.letterman:

2000:
T Feb. 22: guest host Bill Cosby
Th Feb. 24: guest host Kathie Lee Gifford
T Feb. 29: guest host David Brenner
Th Mar. 2: guest host Nathan Lane
T Mar. 7: guest host Janeane Garofalo
Th Mar. 9: guest host Dana Carvey

2003:
W Feb. 26: guest host Bruce Willis

Bruce was obviously very nervous. And the is simply a different skill needed to basically pull off a show like this solo. It definately is not the same thing as acting in a movie.

Although overall I think Bruce did okay. Remember unlike a new talk show host, he had no test shows and no practice. He got to do it as about as cold and unrehearsed as one could possibly be.

Bruce is a big star. Has appeared in front of a ton of people lots of times. One of the biggest stars in the world. Just makes you remember that this is something very few people do or ever have to do. So when a new show (aka Jimmy Kimmel) comes around, it is reasonable to give the host a chance to right the oars in the water.

I give Bruce credit if for nothing else having the balls to do it, and put himself out there. Most stars of his stature would have declined.

Bruce was nervous, but why didn't they give him ANY bits? He could have done the regular gags, the top 10, etc. He didn't have any "fun" to work with.
