Joss Whedon on the end of Buffy

From Yahoo - I thought I'd post a separate thread so it doesn't get buried in the other "Buffy is going away" threads ...
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon has officially acknowledged the end of his critically acclaimed UPN series -- and is already mulling plans for a spin-off.
With star Sarah Michelle Gellar this week confirming her exit, Whedon Wednesday told the Daily Variety trade paper that the 20th Century Fox TV-produced show wouldn't go on without her or him.
"We're shuffling off to Buffalo," Whedon said. "Sarah's decision was wrapped up in mine. We weren't interested in doing it without the other."
In May, the series will wrap its seven-season run (which began in 1997 on the WB) with an hour-long finale episode penned and directed by Whedon titled "Chosen". Emmy-nominated Whedon and executive producer Marti Noxon have just begun hammering out details of the final three scripts.
UPN chiefs have indicated their interest in a spin-off of "Buffy" and Whedon said he is willing. The timetable is up in the air, however.
Whedon said he hoped the legacy of "Buffy," which earned nine Emmy nominations and two wins, would be a series that was "part of the move toward genuinely strong female characters that weren't cardboard cut-outs. The idea was to venerate people who weren't taken seriously and make a real strong feminist statement."
The WB hasn't yet decided whether it will bring back "Angel" for a fifth season, but Whedon said he's upbeat.
"I don't know where we stand ... but I'm putting my money on this not being the last season," he said. "I love this ... show, and I won't let myself think this is an end." For now, "Angel" fans can look forward to a guest appearance by "Buffy" star Alyson Hannigan.

It's too bad -- Buffy has been one of my "must see" shows since it came on (I watched every show of every season).
I heard that it's unlikely that the spinoff will be based on Faith, which is a shame, because her character is very cool.

Joss has shown himself to me to be a very worthwhile series creator/writer. I look forward to his next project even if its not Buffy-related.

Well, here's hoping for some kind of spin off.
I'd even be happy with a Dawn based show. A bad season of Buffy still beats the pants off a good season of most anything else. So I'm not afraid of a few "bad" shows from a Buffy spin off.
My favorite characters in the show aren't even Buffy. Keep something going with Xander, Spike, Giles (please!), Willow, etc. and I'll be happy.

Yes, I think there should be a spinoff with the other characters. I was thinking that was why they were having this gathering of the potential slayers so that someone could take over the slayer position at the end of this season. Xander, Anya, Willow, Dawn, Giles and sexy Spike are great characters! I will miss this show a lot!

James Marsters can only do Spike for so long. Apparently, he has to do extreme dieting to stay that thin. I think he'd like to be normal sooner or later (and continue playing with his band Ghost of the Robot)

Warning, warning! I'm going to say the "F" word. :D
Makes me wonder if Joss didn't make a mistake by launching Firefly when he did. Would it have worked better if Buffy were already over and he had more time to devote to it? Would there have been better "what's Joss going to do next?" buzz if we were all Buffy-deprived?
On the other hand, if he had waited, we would have had a different cast. The chances that all of those actors would have been available all at the same time, or would have wanted to audition for it next year, is slim to none.
Whatever Joss' next project is, we can look forward to a good cast, I betcha.

James is also starting to age, just a little, a real no-no for the immortal undead. :)
Here's my thought on how they can address both issues, and tie in a little prophesy at the same time:
(includes season two Angel spoilers)
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Since Wolfram and Hart raised the long-dusty Darla in the second season of Angel, we know that can be done if you have access to Magicks powerful enough. Darla came back human though, a neat little wrinkle. Interestingly, we also have many prophesies of a Vampire with a Soul becoming human. So...
If they stake Spike at the end of the Buffy this season, Willow, who has the most powerful magicks of all, could raise him as a human for the spin-off. Maybe he could be a watcher, as was quasi-foreshadowed in Restless. As a human, he could eat, tan and age. :)

You know, Lori, I was thinking that myself, and I like it.

Yep, those soft filters on the lenses get a little blurrier and blurrier each year, don't they?

I just started watching it 2 seasons ago, with Glory as the big bad. It can't end now!!!!!!

Although Marsters is doing a MUCH better job of staying young than Boreanaz...when I compare the early Buffys to the recent Angels, the difference is downright shocking. Perfectly normal, of course, for somebody going from 26 to 34, but not so reasonable for somebody going from 246 to 254!

I would agree--although I think Marsters is helped by the makeup. When I see Marsters on a talk show, he looks every inch of his 40 years.

Spike is 40?!?!
Wow. I thought all the actors were mid 30's tops.

I think Joss should take it in a entirely different direction. Take Giles, Xander and Spike and do a Touched by An Angel (or more to the point Vampire) type of show, except this one would be watchable :D
Seriously though, something centered around those three would be good.

Actually, Spike is well over 100. :D

Actually, they might be younger than you think. Of the regulars, with the exception of Tony Head at 49, the oldest actor is Nick Brendan, at 31. Sarah is 25, Allyson is 28, Emma is 29, Michelle is 17 and Eliza is 22.
James shaved 10 years off his age for a long time, listing his birthdate as being November 1972. He came clean about that last year, revealing that it was really 1962.

Oh no.... They would appear to vampires and everyone would cry each episode until the vampire saw the light and regains it's soul....
