Error 51 - must I really clear and delete?

I received an advance replacement for my HDVR2 in which I had a 120GB Samsung drive. I assumed that I would just switch the drive to the new unit and be on my way, but I've learned about Error 51. Is the only fix to clear and delete everything? I have about 20 programs I have not watched yet, so it is a problem. If there is a way to back up my existing stuff or get around the error 51, without erasing my stuff, please let me know.

You actually can watch your stuff just fine - it's new programming that you wont be able to get until you do the C&D.
If you have another drive, you can do a dd and copy the files so that you can watch them by swapping drives (or just prepare the other drive as the new drive) but short of that, we don't know of any way.

In my case, all the TIVO functions (including the now playing list) are disabled. All I can do is live TV, so I can't access my pre-recorded programs.

tivosky is correct...you CANNOT access any TiVo functions with an error 51. You can only watch liveTV.
Unfortunately, the only way is a "Clear and Delete everything", which of course deletes everything.
A "dd" won't help since that would still copy the TiVo service number info that ties that drive to it's original box.
