dd versus mfsbackup -Tao

hello,
I have heard that when upgrading, more partitions are added which could place a limit on the number of upgrades that could be done.
dd makes a exact copy, and thus preserves the same partitions. Is the mfs backup piped to mfs restore rearanges the partitions so that extra ones are removed (resseting the clock sort of)?
Also when divorcing drives if more partition where added to drive A, are they removed?
thanks
