hi all. this morning i went through the menu to restart my 80-hr s2 tivo tivo. it's about 2 weeks old. anyway, it's been about 10 minutes since i restarted it and it's still on the "welcome. powering up" screen. i have not upgraded this box and have never opened the case. it's about 2 weeks old. i think it has done a 1 (the first ever) service update since the last reboot. should i be worried here? i've seen other people talk about this screen - but they've all upgraded their boxes. mine's brand new...

ah. unplugged it. waited 60 seconds. plugged it back in again and everything worked fine. any idea why it hung on a regular restart through the menu?

TiVo is basically a computer running linux. I'm sure your computer freezes too. It's the same thing.

I have owned 2 Series One and know I own two Series 2 80hr units. I noticed when my Series 2 had it's initial downloading of program data it had to restart and it took quite a few minutes for it to clear the screen that you mentioned.

It is possible you had a program update or it is also possible that your unit locked up.

For the lockup condition I would suggest a good name brand surge suppressor like Panamax or APC or even better put your Tivo on an APC ups unit.

The advantage of the battery backup unit is provides power conditioning and backup power during a loss of power.

After all who wants to have a recording stop because of loss of power. I also have my cable converter box plugged into the ups also so I will not loose power.
