Unexpected Benefit of Upgrade Offer
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Although I've been a hanging around here for about a year (I think) I've posted only once before. (But enjoy lurking -- and learning!)
As a Lifetime Sub customer, I got the message about transferring the Lifetime Sub to a new Series 2 unit.
I was perfecctly content with my Sony SVR-2000 and considered upgrading with a second HD at some point -- but NOT buying a Series 2 because I'd already sprung for the Lifetime Sub.
But when TiVo made their announcement, it sent me back over here for the first time in months to find out more. Yikes, there's already 468 replies in that thread!
But if not for that, I would not have known about the strong resale value of the Series 1 units with Lifetime.
So after weighing all the various offers (and their myriad permutations), I decided to do this:
Bought a Sony SVR-3000 (my right hand knows the Sony remote too well), bought a new Lifetime Sub for it at $249 and will put my SVR-2000 with its Lifetime Sub up for sale first to friends, then to eBay (if needed).
I paid a couple more bucks than the service swap offer, but like Sony's new unit very much (especially that empty 2nd drive bay) and somebody will get a nice deal on a complete Series 1 machine soon!
So, while it is not exactly what TiVo intended by offering the swap, it did have the desired effect! And I'm happy!

Actually I think TiVo is hoping for that to happen -- they'd rather have that old TiVo still in use and circulation (i.e., earning them subscription money) than in a closet somewhere! (Not only generating revenue, but also "spreading the word" to new owners who can pass it on to their friends, too.)
