CompUSA: 80GB Maxtor w/ 8mB cache for $69.99 after rebate, starts 3/2!

Just picked up a "CompUSA brand" hard drive (marked "CompUSA by Maxtor") at the Santa Clara, CA CompUSA. It's item #301730.

A salesperson showed me the ad for tomorrow (3/2), which advertises a $60 mail-in rebate for it. The in-store price is (and will remain) $129.99, bringing the final (after rebate) cost to $69.99!

The drive has an 8mB cache, which many have said speeds up the menus & such. It *is* a 7200 rpm drive, but my Tivo's running cool and is not in an enclosed cabinet, so I'm just going to see how it goes. Haven't heard many complaints about Maxtor's when it comes to heat & noise.

DON'T CONFUSE THIS WITH THE STRAIGHT "MAXTOR" BRANDED DRIVE! There *is* another 80GB/8mB/7200rpm Maxtor drive CompUSA sells, but it won't have this rebate on it.

He said deals like this always result in a huge line of folks at opening time waiting for the ad specials, since the ad's limited to quantity on hand and they go fast. I can't make it tomorrow morning, and they wouldn't hold an ad item for more than just today. However, they conceded that if I bought the drive today, their "price protection" would cover me so I'd still get the rebate. I'll just have to go back in tomorrow to get the rebate form.

88 cents per gig makes it well worth the rebate wait!

They also have unadvertized special on thier web site - removed outdated url

I got the last of these 60 gigers at my local store. I'm sure they change specials from time to time (like 3/2 maybe). You can check inventory online before heading to the store.

I saw the $59.99 60GB drive, too... but figured $10 was well worth 20GB more and 6mB of cache (the 60GB has a 2mB cache, it seemed).

No doubt the 80GB is a better deal. My point was more that Comp does unadvertized specials that we should keep alert for. I wish I'd know about your deal before I bought mine.

The rebate has now been posted on the CompUSA website:

They've also got a 120GB Maxtor for 129.99 after rebate.

Think it's too late to return my 60GB? Just kidding, I'll be up to 40+60 for close to 100 hours. I think I can live with that

.... for now.
