QAF - Season opener (possible spoilers)

Anyone here watch it last night?

It was nice seeing it start up again. I like so many of those characters, it's great to see them in new situations. A couple things I really enjoyed about the show...

Michael getting slugged! About time. What a weiner! Not only is he the worst actor on the show, but his character is just so annoying.

Teddy and Emmett getting cold feet. LOL!

The ending. Man, that was a scene with impact! I never felt so sorry for Brian as I did during that ending.

With the exception of the ending, it wasn't really a notable episode. Not much happens and it was a bit bland. But that ending was pretty great!

About the fact that it was supposed to be in HD. Was it really HD? I mean, the picture quality was better than normal cable, but it still didn't seem as good as some things I've seen. I don't watch a lot of HDTV because Tivo is just so damn convenient, but when I used to watch Odyssey 5, that looked AWESOME. This just looked nice. Not worth the extra hassle of fiddling around with the HD converter and bypassing the Tivo.

Queer As Folk?

Oops. I cancelled that recording, thinking it was still from last season.

Oh well. I'll pick it up tomorrow night. :)

Queer As Folk... where to begin. <g>

I liked the bit about "Bulls and the Bears" although I'd not call the lesbians "bull-dykes" nor the stocky leather guys "bears," but that's just me.

Michael certainly had it coming. Yay! Michael, honey, wake up and smell the poppers! Brian has fallen and hasn't hit bottom yet, stick with your sweetie before you are single again.

The ending was certainly a glimpse at how far Brian has fallen, but still has more to go before any kind of redemption can get underway.

Ted & Emmett - just give up already.

Glad to see Vic is still alive and kicking and I hope we get to see more of Debbie and her cop friend.

Justin & Ethan - glad to see Fabrizio Fillipo reprise his role, although the gratuitous butt shots of everyone seemed overdone.

Yes, Michael is very annoying. How does a hot man like Ben put up with him? Did I mention Ben was hot? :D Anyway, a good episode overall but not the best.

I liked the premeire. It was certainly much better than a number of episodes in season 2. The Ted and Emmitt thread is most interesting to me right now for a number of reasons. Brian is finally becoming an interesting character to me, as well. Thank god Michael got a fist in the face. If only they'd keep coming...

I have to say, the whole nudity thing has become a joke. No problem showing full frontal of women, but with the men, it's becoming more and more like an Austin Powers gag.

I think I read in an article that Deb's relationship with the cop plays a big part in this season, also...

Watching QAF is a guilty pleasure. There's no basis in reality and, pound for pound, it has the most characters I really can't stand.

Brian, for one. And now Michael. Hit him again for me.

I really felt sorry for Brian in the last scene...he loved Justin in his own way and Justin just didn't see it...

As for the HD broadcast, it definately wasn't filmed in HD. What it looked like to me was that they just upconverted the original signal and called it HD. But, it was much nicer than what my SA would have recorded.

Overall I liked the episode just because it grounded the characters more in my mind.

Brian loves Justin. He just can't admit to loving anyone and does what he can to sabotage it. I think Justin could see it. That's why he stayed for so long. It just wasn't enough.

Brian loves Michael, so he keeps trying to sabotage his relationships as well. I think Brian holds himself back with Michael because he knows that it will be the end of his swinging bachelor days if he does. Michael is just an idiot for continuing to love Brian as much as he does. This whole thing is obviously going to screw things up with Ben.....but we saw that coming last season.

Am I the only one that hated Justin's hair? If it's only been a couple of weeks, how is his hair suddenly that much longer? Very disconcerting.

I hated his hair at first, but halfway into the episode it started to grow on me. It makes him look more mature and helps to dispel the "twinkish" look slightly.

I'm pretty sure it hasn't been a couple of weeks, though. I think the S3 premiere takes place a few days (at most) since the end of S2.

except didn't Michael make mention "Let me take you back a couple of weeks". I figured Mel and Lindsey's anniversary party was a couple weeks after the Babylon party.....

Could've been a couple of days. I just thought I heard Michael say weeks....

And yes, it makes justin look less like a twink with longer hair. His voice seemed a bit deeper as well. :D

I thought it was a pretty good opener...

I did feel something for Brian this week.... a nice different side to him. I too think he really did love "Sunshine"

Ted and Emmett - well I guess it could happen.... however I really grew to LOVE Emmett's character when he was going out with Shickle (sp) the older guy. I thought that was a nice story line and wish they would have kept it going. Brought out a great side in Emmett that you didn't see before!

I actually liked Justin's hair.. it did make him look "more mature" than last season.

Debbie looks like she is loosing weight and looked good. Glad to see Vic is still in the picture!

As for Michael.. the punch should have happened a long time ago! Will be interesting to see how this plays out with Ben and all. If I were Ben... not sure how I would be handling the Brian/Michael thing! :-)

Edit: And the two "bears" that Brian brings to the anniversary party.. I would classify them more as "leather types"... they were not HAIRY enough to be bears!! LOL

Halfway through the eppy, my partner finally shouted in exasperation... "Will somebody please cut that boys hair!!!!"

The gratuitous butt scenes are a bit distracting, I'll admit that. I imagine it must be difficult to be one of the actors, gain recognition, and have to do nude scenes. Butt shots are one thing, but knowing that I'd be more and more recognizable, I'd be less willing to do full frontal nudity with any kind of regularity. I wouldn't say that they shy away from it though and instead concentrate on female nudity.... I've seen plenty of willies on the show.

I've read there's actually a very good reason why they don't show more frontal nudity of men. When a man is naked on the show, it's usually because of a scene with a sexual nature to it (as opposed to just taking a shower or changing). You can easily show women nude in those scenes, but if you show a man, it would be obvious that he's not... "excited". Showing a nude man, and showing a man fully excited are two different things. And besides, even if an actor agreed to be filmed naked, he'd probably object at having to get a woody for it.

at which point, it gets an X-rating and can't really be shown on Showtime.

I agree with Agatha Mystery that Brian is having commitment problems with Justin. However, I see his relationship with Michael totally different. I see that he is effectively destroying his relationships. However, I do not see him having a romantic love partnership. Brian clearly loves Michael as a friend and he is clearly sabotaging his relationships. I just don't think it is because he wants him for himself, sexually. Maybe for a convenient guy to hang out with. I think he still sees himself with Justin, i.e. episode two when he pays a "Sunshine" lookalike prostitute.

Gratuitous butt scenes??? You ARE joking right? These characters exist just to show off their gratuitous butts!

Heck I didn't even NOTICE Justin's haircut! I like Ethan best -- at least he seems real. He should be on Six Feet Under.

Pretty much all the regular QAF characters are, well, cartoons -- after all it IS a guilty pleasure.

No musician I've ever known shows his or her emotions by immediately picking up an instrument and playing an "angry" piece of music.

There is not one single realistic person on QAF.

That said, I still maintain that the show is a guilty pleasure.

I really like the gay storylines (and characters) on SFU, but QAF is just too much for me. It turns my stomach.
