I think that this show is borderline genius (but I also love Aqua Teen Hungerforce! ). I'm curious as to what y'all think........

IMHO, this show is targeted to the Beavis and Butthead demographic. My new fav HBO show is Real Time with Bill Maher.
In Other Words: I Hated it!
Posted by: nataylor
Absolute hilarity. Loved this last show, especially the UN part. "Why do you give crap countries a vote?"
PS: I'm also a huge Aqua Teen Hunger Force fan. :)
Posted by: phodg
Great show. The religious debate was especially funny. Some people take themselves waaayy too seriously.
Posted by: tonyoci
It's a great show, the funniest laugh out loud thing I have seen in years. Low brow sure but I get enough "real life" elsewhere.
There are so many hilarious lines and they do not sound so funny when they are repeated but they have the wife and I wetting ourselves laughing. Week 1 I was not keen on Bharat or the male model, but Bharat was really good in week 2 and the model was missing.

I think this show goes back and forth from hilarious to just stupid and boring. I have to be in a certain mood to laugh at it, but when I'm in the right mood it's very funny.

Count me as an other    vote. Of course, I can't stand the whole rap/hip-hop culture, so "Ali G" really grates on me.
I can't see how anybody can get past that voice and accent. hearing him talk was like someone running their fingers up and down a chalkboard.

That's kind of the point, the guy is an Oxford Grad (or something like that) who is making fun of the hip/hop culture.

yeah, he isnt trying to be taken serious like a real hip/hopper or anything...
I love the one interview he gave to Access Hollywood...went something like this (he was trying to rap)
"Yo, to the hip hop hibby hop his da hap hoppenesthomie around the corner near my grandmum's house yo"
Or something like that. Just plain hysterical.
I think the people that find him annoying are the ones that truly think he thinks he's hip, when he knows he ain't "down with it".
Posted by: Ekims
So then your saying it is the same shtick every show? Count me out....
Posted by: thehepcat
He was on Conan the other night. Hilarious.
Borat is my favorite character. "...but if she cheats on me I will crush her" :D

I don't think he's making fun of hip hop culture, he's created a character that embodies all of the negative stereotypes of a not very intelligent white guy trying to be down with hip hop. He takes it to an extreme that doesn't really exist, that's what makes it funny to me. But I think that character can get old. I wish that he did like 7 characters and didn't get so caught up in the Ali G thing.

I caught part of it last week at the hotel; not bad, but IMO it suffered from SNL syndrome--take a bit that will get laughs, and just drag it out forever.
I would love to get a transcript of that interview he did with the former attorney general (or whoever he was)--that was absolutely hysterical.
Posted by: mrboo
I think the show is hilarious. Especially the middle eastern guy who visits the etiquette lady. "My seester ees prostitute...high five!" I was laughing out loud.
Don't read too much into where the comedy is coming from or who is being made fun of. Just see if it strikes you funny or not. I've never heard of "snl syndrome"--is that a phenomenon you've researched yourself?
Posted by: marksman
I think the only reason I even recorded it was because someone here mentioned it somewhere else. I did not have high expectations. Too often shows along these lines miss my mark.. But after seeing just one episode so far, I thought it was really funny.
The whole dating show was hysterical, the police training hysterical.
And I have to admit I fell on the floor when I saw him interviewing Edwin Meese. I was like what the hell is he doing on here?
I will definately be keeping my eye on this show. I think it is entertaining.

What!? This show is genius. I've been a big fan for a while. I got most of his stuff from the UK.
You really got to pay attention to it before you judge it because you think it's just some loser who thinks he's cool. They ad-libbing he does is hilarious.
And that Newsweek article is retarded. It's an English/Jamaican accent (even though he's Jewish) and he uses slang from the English Drum & Bass scene and the Jamaican dub ragga scene. He mixes it together with Hip-Hop also.
go here for more funny Ali G stuff www.lando.co.uk and click on Ali G.

You should try the inner city of a few English cities these days, they are full of people just like him who are not trying to be funny, they really are like that and it's not a stereotype, there really are people who dress and talk like him (though they do not say as many funny things).
My favorite part this week was when he asked how to handle it at dinner if he farted, the lady told him be polite, he says "I made a smell, it smells like sheet" (phonetic accent included).

Maybe so, I haven't been to London in a while. I don't think his clothes are that out there, it's more the over the top accent, bad grammar, and naiveté. It's like if you were to parody a hillbilly by dressing in a cowboy hat, torn overalls, no shirt, with a piece of straw in your mouth, talking about intimate relations with livestock and your cousins. Taking a stereotype to the extreme, just like Borat and the gay Austrian guy.
I think the naiveté is a big part of what makes the Ali G and Borat bits funny. His mock clueless ad-libs are just hilarious, sometimes.

Holy Crap. I just watched the second episode. I thought that priest was gonna flip out and kill him.
...and I am pretty sure that Brent Scocroft was sitting in own crap. He barely knew where he was.
Posted by: MannyVjr
In the second episode (WAR) when discussing religion and he told the priest that the reason Jesus was born in a stable was because there was no room in the inn for him due to the christmas season.

I just watched the second episode after watching the latest Dave Chapelle Show.
Nice double feature.

Absolutely. This Ali G show was much better than the first. And Chappelle is great. "Pretty Woman" had me laughing out loud.

Watching the "Politics" episode now...pretty funny!! "Borat's Guide to America" is hilarious!! :)
Posted by: apagano
I watched it for about five minutes and caught some of the Newt Gingrich interview. I just didn't "get it." I didn't see the humor in an interview that appeared to be extremely awkward on purpose. I'm sure at some point I'll check his show out again and maybe it will grow on me.
Posted by: Family
The show is not genius, but it's certainly quite funny in spots. This type of humor has been done before.... this is just the next generation.
Actually reminds me of Laugh-In when it first premiered.
Posted by: jerobi
Alright, first I thought it was funny, then I thought it was lame in a "Tom Green-ish harrassment" sort of way. But after the recent "WAR" episode I saw last night, I'm switching back over to the funny camp.
Even if you didn't like the show, you have to give the guy credit for sticking to the ruse. How he kept a straight face constantly like that...I've done improv comedy and I've never seen someone with that much focus.
Posted by: BBQ Chicken
After just watching the new episode "politics" I think this is one of my new favorite shows, Absolutely hilarious.. The ice cream glove bit was golden.
Posted by: DLiquid
Yeah, the ice cream glove bit was pretty funny. Stuff like that is almost funnier when you think about it a day later than it was when you were watching.
He's been interviewing some pretty big names in politics. I can't imagine that he'll be able to get these interviews anymore now that the HBO show has started.
Posted by: Dafaso
I also thought it was hilarious. The part with the guy from the DEA was great.
Posted by: tonyoci
Yeah
"Can you give ecstasy to your pet"
"No"
"But what if he looks really sad"
T
Posted by: DLiquid
My biggest laughs were from these lines about Ecstasy:
"Ain't da most worrying thing about deese dough, dat it actually make you enjoy house music?"
"Is there a chemical inside it, dat actually make you dance like a belind?"
Here's another good line from the original that didn't make it into the HBO edit:
"Which is the type of acid that actually make you fly?"
Posted by: DLiquid
I just realized something while watching some of the Ali G stuff I downloaded last year. The UK version has a laugh track, the HBO version does not. This makes a bigger difference than I would think, in that I found myself laughing more at the Dangerous Drugs bit with the laugh track than I did when I watched it on HBO without the laugh track. I bet some people that stumble on this show on HBO don't immediately realize the comedy nature of some of the bits.
Posted by: tonyoci
So dliquid, as a resident expert, how much do you think the "guests" know about what is going on. Some of them seem to quickly realize and some never seem to realize though they continue to ignore the stupidity of the questions. What exactly do they think is going on ?
what the heck was Donald Trumps problem. Given how well others stuck it out he looked pretty stupid this week. I loved it when he talked about creating drip proof ice cream and Ali said "that's a f***ing good idea"

I just think this show is brilliant. I mean, I know its been done before, but this guy is a master at the dead serious stare.
While some skits like Borats Guide to America are outright hilarious, I also love the subtle way he exploits people that are full of themselves, like the fool that produced the model show. I mean, the reject talked in circles, just so he could answer anything he was asked. First he agreed it was "heavy", like "falling down". And then Ali G leads him into saying how "light" he wanted the show to be. Totally classic, and ingenious. I love how he ends the interview by finally asking the same question on all of our minds..."So, do you believe in being consistent?" and the fool answers....no. Brilliant.
Everyone seems to grade him on his laugh-out-loud comedy skits, but some of the best work he does is the subtle "lets see if we can make this person show how much of a bellend he is".
Im now a huge fan.
Big up yourself. Respect.

The bit with Borat at the health club was funny. I screamed when he positioned his crotch right in front of the guy's face (when he was on the leg machine).

I have no idea. I'm no expert, I just downloaded a bunch of his U.K. stuff about a year ago. Some of the people being interviewed have to know he's a comedian, like the drug interview guy, and the religious panel. But the US politicians, I doubt they'd do the interview if they knew. It seems like no one is onto the Borat thing no matter how over the top he goes with that character. "It smells like a sheet."
Posted by: Jojo
When I left the UK 4 years ago, he was still relatively unknown, except for the younger age group that watched his show. Now that everyone has heard of him, there's no way he could do these interviews anymore. I'm sure thats why they decided to bring it to the US.
I read an article the other day (can't remember where) saying that the show researchers always pitch it to the interviewees as being a show for kids, or inner-city youth, or something that would explain why the interviewer is dressed like that, and talks like that, to someone who is totally out of touch with the younger age group. Notice that all the subjects are usually from a much older age group. I don't remember seeing any interviews with people who looked under 50. I'm sure they realise something fishy is going on, but I think the deadly combination is that they are on TV, and don't want to ruin their interview and look foolish by complaining, and also they realise they are unfamiliar with the show's purported audience, and so can't be sure that the questions are really inappropriate or not.

That explains a lot.. I was wondering about that too. So were these episodes they were showing originally shot for the UK audiences?

Well the guy who did the Gun Club Schtick is a talk show host on a radio station in Dallas. He started off on a paid weekend show, and recently moved to evenings on a station here.
He just found out about being on the show. He was under the impression that it was just some guy from Kazikstan (sorry I have no idea how to spell that and am currently too lazy to look it up), and that it was no big deal as he gets interview requests from foreign places all the time. But he conducted the interview believing it would never be seen anywhere remotely related to where he would ever be.
Another show on the station had him on today to talk about it, and they said he did not look as bad as some of the other Borat victims. I just watched the third show this afternoon, and I have to disagree a bit with their assessment. I was dying laughing every time he high-fived him.
I have become a huge fan of this show. The interviews make it. As someone else mentioned he keeps in character the whole time, as far as we can tell, and it makes a big difference. Even when he says some crazy stuff. But he is really good at doing this interviews, as he is able to push it close to the edge and bring it back in. I think without the schtick he would be an excellent interviewer.
One final note, Ken Goldberg (the gun club guy on the show), was interviewed over a year ago. So it seems he might have a lot of these interviews already in the can before they put these shows together.
Posted by: tonyoci
These interviews were all done for the UK show.
The gun club guy appeared to be the only one who actually did know what's going on so it's funny to find out that he did not.
The kids show approach does seem to make sense.

So, I love this show, but how old are these episodes? I mean, they talk about Osama Bin Laden, so it can't be TOO old, right?
I love the show, definitely worth the season pass... but I do think he went a little too far interviewing a room full of priests. That has been the only one I thought wasn't "'pushing it to the edge" as some of you have simply stated... it fell off the ledge.

I believe it's a mix bag of old stuff he's done for the UK and new stuff done recently.

I thought I was going to piss myself watching this past Friday's show. Borat is my favorite character.
Borat at the minor league baseball game:
Trying to kiss the cop, then asking him about the "chocolate faced" actor.
Posted by: Ekims
I still fail to see the humor in this show. I reluctantly watched the C. Everett Coop section and found myself just shaking my head and not laughing. IMHO, This type of comedy will grow boring quickly.
Posted by: tonyoci
Maybe I have gotten too used to it but I have not enjoyed the last couple of episodes as much. It was funny watching the medical guy get pissed with him and the look on the faces of the panel when he talked about the fact that he was OK with them being Homo Sapiens

Ditto. It's the same characters over and over again and I know what to expect. I'm losing interest with each episode. He needs to come up with something new.

For anyone who thinks AliG is funny, add the following information to the beginning of a web address to have it translated to AliG:
http://alig.webdeznet.co.uk/?website=
For example: http://alig.webdeznet.co.uk/?website=http://www.cnn.com
Like the show, this can be very funny, or not funny. Play around with different sites.
One that I think is pretty funny is this Furby Story

Not sure if there are plans for any new U.S. ones, but the various file trading programs have a bunch of the U.K. ones on there.

Loved the national anthem. And the ice cream glove.. And the religion talk..
(from memory, remembering wrong I'm sure):
"She must have.. um.. how you say.. plow experience.."
"Let me stop you right there.. you're not going to find any girls here with plow experience"
"Well not much! You know, just 1-2 years.."
Do you think consistency is important?
Yo, check it.. Me dig whun da peeps comes on da forum and doesn't get wot da show is about. It makes da experience evun funnia whun they's be sayin it's not funny, 'coz it is. Boyakasha! hand THAT.. that.. that's the.. well.. da funny bit.

The U.S. shows are all new material. Trust me, I have everything Ali G has ever done. Check out this website http://www.lando.co.uk and click on Ali G. He has some of the U.S. episodes and the UK episodes. Some of the interviews are re-done with Americans as opposed to Brits.
The people who don't like it just don't get it.
