Very Happy newbie - TiVo and Ethernet Plug and Play!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: dvs fore

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my excitement on how EASY it was to setup my TiVo over Ethernet. The whole setup took about 20 min.. maybe less..

It was plug and play literally. I purchased the Linksys USB100M and BEFW11S4, literally took it out of the box, plug in the USB on the TOP port of the TiVo.. plug in all necessary cables, and everything JUST WORKED..
no rebooting, no switching USB ports on back of tivo.. I simply entered ,#401 as I've read and researched and everything worked like a charm!!

I was so amazed on how easy this was.. I was expecting to have problems over the Ethernet, but everything "just worked." It was so easy!!

I have software version 3.2.0-01-2-240.

Looking forward to exploring the new world of TiVo!!

I got a LinkSys USB100TX yesterday, and had the same experience. Very easy to install on my new Series 2. Now I'm just waiting for HMO...
:D

I'm a little unclear about this. I've been searching these forums for a while trying to figure out exaclty what I need to setup my Tivo Series 2 with my broadband cable connection.

What's described here looks very simple and painless but I reading posts like this, http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...t=wep+broadband , imply that you can't do USB wireless until after April.

Will the setup described here with a Linksys usb adapter and wireless router work with my Tivo Series 2 today?

Posted by: PhillyTiVo

There is a way to use wireless with series2....it's just that the series2 doesn't know it!

What most people are using USB Ethernet adapters (about $20) and then a wireless Ethernet adapter to turn any Ethernet connection into a wireless connection (about $79).

I just setup my series2 with the following hardware and it was flawless...

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Pr...prod=233&site=c

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Pr...prod=272&site=c

Or...you could wait for native wireless in April...

How much did those cost?

I just hooked up my new Series II 80hr that I ordered on the last day of the "switch lifetime sub to a new SII" promo. I looked all over tivo.com for a way to switch my service number from the old Sony SVR-2000 to the new SII box. Couldn't find any way to do it and finally called them. The CS rep said that for that promo you have to call them.

I took all the cables from the back of the Sony box and plugged them into the exact same jacks on the SII box. I bought the Belkin F5D5050 USB/Ethernet adapter ($29 at CompUSA) and hooked it up. Put in the ,#401 and went into GS. Bing, Bing, Bing done. Never had the first test call fail, and didn't have to cycle power on the box. It just plain worked like it was supposed to.

The download where it says on the screen "20 to 30 minutes" took exactly 34 seconds! :D

The switchover from old box to new was totally painless, couldn't have been easier or quicker. :o

I already have a wireless network in place, but am wondering if I have to wait until April to add the TiVo to my network using one of these:

I bought a Belkin F5D5050 tonite (21$) and plugged it in and entered
the prefix, I didnt let it test the connection as I had no activity light
on the adapter.
I unplugged the unit and near the end the orange light glowed..
performed the test in 2-3 seconds, then made daily call in about 20 seconds.. voila!!

I am going to kill my phone service in my house now, since all I had
a phone line for was for my TIVO to dial up. I can just use my cellphone
as my main phone now.. thanks tivo!

-Has anyone tried the compusa-brand usb-ethernet adapter? IT's only 19.99$, wasnt on the list on the forums tho, so i didn't try it.

Too bad usb 2.0 isn't supported, I guess a 12mb transfer rate is ok.

I currently have a wired network at home with a couple of PCs and a hub connected to a cable modem. Can I just get a USB to Ethernet adapter for my TiVo Series 2 and connect it directly to the hub and have it work? My Tivo is very close to my hub. Do you need to get an extra IP address from the cable internet provider?

Thanks,

-Todd

The TiVo should be treated just like the other devices on your network - if you had to get a static IP address from your provider for each computer currently on your network, you will have to get an additional one for the TiVo. However...

A simpler/better way to go would be to buy a gateway/router. The router sits between your cable modem and the computers on your network; it should have 4 ethernet ports (at least) and will replace your existing hub. However, the advantage is that the router will use NAT (Network Address Translation) to allow all of the computers on your home network to share a single IP address from your provider. Wired routers are currently pretty cheap - $30 or so. Additionally, most router/gateways have some form of firewall built-in, giving your network some basic security.

If the "hub" you currently have is really a hub and not one of these routers, I'd recommend spending the $30 on the router. I would bet that 90% of the people on this board who have a home network have some form of router.

Hey I did not believe it but it was so easy I was shocked. It is definitely plug & play with the new series 2 Tivo. I was amazed that no hacking was needed. I can not wait for the HMO.

Yes, you definitely have to wait. NO wireless adapters will work until you have 4.0. Everyone who has 3.2 and is using wireless is actually using a USB->Wired adapter, then adding a Wired->Wireless bridge. But USB->Wireless adapters will work with 4.0.

If you have a Tivo Series 2 it will work on a wireless aswell. I am using an Linksys USB-100 To Ethernet adapter and it was plug and play. My network is wired and wireless. I am using a Linksys wireless/4 port router. You may need to restart your Tivo and make sure the link light is on your USB to wireless adapter as well as changing your dialing prefix to ,#401.

Sorry, not possible. I was under the impression that there were no drivers in 3.2 which would work with wireless adapters. And there's some configuration required on the wireless side which 3.2 has no mechanism for.

You mention that you're using the Linksys USB-100 on your TiVo. I assume you mean USB-100M? That's a WIRED adapter. Sure, part of your network can be wireless - but in 3.2 you can't use a wireless USB adapter. You have to wait until 4.0.

Except you can "fool" it in a way. I have a WUSB100M connected to a WET11 (a ethernet to wireless bridge) -- both from LinkSys and it works fine. The downside is this is more expensive than a single USB wireless adapter would be. The upside is that I can go to wired ethernet if I need (or want) to.

Right, I know that. In fact, that is EXACTLY what I said just a few posts ago in this thread:

Can you tell me where you found the info on using the wired USB nic? I am not having much luck?

Thanks everyone in this post to help me change over (and prep for HMO) with the ethernet. your post here were a big help even though it was very easy to setup with no problems..... i used the linksys usb100m pluged it in rebooted tivo and changed my dialup prefix to ,401 WORKED GREAT THANKS EVERYONE!!! :D

Can't wait into HMO comes out...

I LOVE TIVO LIKE A FAT KID LOVES CAKE!:p

Based on the advice in this thread, I bought a Linksys USB100TX, plugged it into my Linksys router and my S2 TiVo, restarted the TiVo, and changed the dialing prefix.

Bing! Bang! Boom! Works like a charm.

Thanks for the tip!
