I am really interested in buying a new tivo Sony SVR-3000. I will need to do the ethernet set up. I just wanted to know if this setup is more of a hack or is this a feature built into tivo? I also wanted to know if there were any compatibility problems with certain routers? I currently have the NetGear RT134 with the new firmware update. I just want to make sure the tivo will work with the equiptment I have before I purchase one. Any help would be appreciated.

This is an 'unsupported feature' that is used routinely.
As long as your router is set to be a DHCP server, it'll be fine.
You'll just need an approved USB-ethernet converter.

After connecting the Tivo with the USB connector(converter) to the router is there anything else I need to do besides the ,#401 in the dail prefix?
Thanks.

That should do it. If you have DHCP and you get link, that's really all there is to it.

Might take a reboot, also...sometimes two.

Just ordered my tivo. Not familiar with the buttons and menus yet. So what exactly does it take to reboot the system? a simple power on off or to pull the plug out of the wall? Please explain.

Just unplug, correct. No switch. And please, take an hour or so and read all the manuals. That is answered in there.

Thanks. I was a bit unclear earlier. I ordered my tivo but have not recived it yet. That is why im not familiar with it. I will read though the manual completely when I get it. thanks

Also, manuals are available online at tivo.com in PDF format, I believe.

I am looking into buy a USB Ethernet adapter for my TiVo.
There are two kinds USB 1.1 (10Mb) and USB 2.0 (100Mb).
Does it make sense to buy a USB 2.0 when a cable modem is only capable of 10Mb or does my Sony SVR3000 need a USB 2.0 adapter?
It probably doesn't make any difference except in price, but I thought let's check before I need to buy two.
Thanks,
Patrick

Probably you should just save the money and go for the 10 MB one - but if you do HMO, the 100 MB might help somehow (we don't yet know, since it's not yet released).
If you do go 100 MB and you have one of the earlier S2 units, be careful to see that the USB is backwards compatible to 1.1 since that's all the AT&T and TiVo 60 have.

Any USB 2.0 device is backwards compatible to USB 1.1, just like any USB 2.0 port is backwards compatible to support USB 1.1 Devices.
10Mbps is more than enough for streaming video between 2 TiVo's I would (and did) save your money and get the least expensive (un)supported USB Network Adapter you can find, for me that was a Compaq IPAQ Networking 10/100 (limited to ~12Mbps by USB 1.1) for $4.99 on the clearance shelf at Best Buy.

And keep in mind that TiVo has already stated that the drivers are only for USB 1.1 devices at this time. Of course they can change their mind later, but TivoPony specifically said that HMO will work with USB 1.1 as designed.
To sum up, don't waste your money on a USB 2.0 adapter. If it works at all, you won't see any benefit.

Even when I use it for communicating with my tivo over ethernet?
