Well i hate waiting for mail in rebates so i printed out the 40 dollar rebate for staples.com and went over to best buy (since i had a gift card and i hate compusa for price matching).
When i got to best buy they honored the price so i bought the drive there for 109.98 BUT they told me tomorrow there will be a 60dollar mail in rebate. so i will be going back and asking for a new receipt tomorrow and therefore getting my drive for 50 bux After rebate.

So just a heads up that you guys can get a 120GB for 50bux if you follow my method:).
Its model Lo1J100 and the staples.com link is http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Brow...pe=1&Sku=503796

So BB matched the Staples price less the rebate?

yep, i was surprised they are usually idiots, its cause their checkout people have the power to pricematch unlike CC

Good luck actually getting a new receipt with today's date.

There are two rebates online again at Best Buy. One is from Maxtor ($40) and one from Best Buy ($20). Interestingly, they both request the original UPC. That's going to be rather difficult.

I had the misfortune of going to a Best Buy that had intelligent Customer Service Reps. He looked at my Staples rebate and informed me that they had the same rebate ($40).

I did get the 2 rebate slips, but as pointed out I'm wondering how to duplicate the UPC code :)

Also note that Best Buy only allows the rebate on 1 drive per household.

Oh well, I got it anyway ... popped it into my new HDVR2 with a restored virgin backup ... worked fine. I just gotta get a new floppy drive so I can boot to DOS to flip the "silent" mode on.

So I just got this Maxtor drive this weekend at Best Buy. Has anyone figured out how to turn one original UPC into 2, or has anyone called Best Buy and asked them how we are supposed to get both rebates that they advertised?

usually u send the original upc to maxtor and the copy to bestbuy (i did this with cc before)

I do this with CompUSA all the time, as they often have two rebates going at the same time. Just send a copy of the UPC with the second rebate.

Woops.. misread this.

I bought this drive this morning, and it is quite loud. I can't find the program on Maxtor's site that does the sound management for this particular drive. Anyone know where to find it?

Oops. I didn't read far enough into the description of the utility on the website. I read...

The AMSET.EXE utility enables, disables, and sets levels for the Acoustic Management (operating sound levels) for the following hard drive families only:
-DiamondMax Plus 40 UDMA/100
-DiamondMax 60 UDMA/100
-DiamondMax VL 30 UDMA/100
-D540X
-D740X

...but I didn't read further down to see where it says...

AMSET.EXE - Utility for changing Acoustic Management on the DiamondMax VL 30, DiamondMax Plus 40 and DiamondMax 60 UDMA/66 ,UDMA/100 and UDMA/133) hard drives. This utility will function with all future products as well.

Sorry for the interruption.

http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm

Download this and it will create a boot floppy that contains amset.exe

To enable quiet mode, simply type: amset /quiet

It will set all Maxtor drives connected to your PC to quiet (if they support it).
