Backup necessary when replacing “A” drive?

I plan on upgrading my TIVO with 2 new drives. Since I am completely replacing my current TIVO “A” drive is there any reason to make a backup image? I plan on keeping my original drive as a backup, safely tucked away in an anti-static bag. I figure that if anything goes wrong I can just pull out the original drive and re-copy.

Thanks!

That's a pretty good idea and should be fine. The only issue would be the age of the A drive - if its already pretty old, you might want a second backup. No drive lasts forever . . .

Does it make sense to create a backup of my directly out of the box new Sony SVR3000?
Or do I when write this image on a larger hard disk get into any trouble?
I read something about software version mismatch.

Thanks,
Patrick

If you are overly concerned that your drive might fail, it never hurts to have a backup. You live in New York, which means storms can cause power issues for you - so you should have a UPS anyway, and a backup is a good idea if you want to take the time to make one.

Michael,

Well I want to hack the TiVo to be able to pull information of the TiVo using my ethernet connection and I want to make a backup before I might screw things up.

I also want to be able to upgrade my drive eventually to 120Gb + 120Gb. (Sony SVR3000) Is it possible to add 120Gb to the existing 80Gb and after a while swap the 80Gb for another 120Gb? I've seen upgrades at your site (www.weaknees.com I assumed) but I couldn't find info about.

If you know how to do the upgrades, you can do this, but we really recommend doing only one upgrade - just going for the biggest one you think you'll eventually want.

Pulling info off the TiVo over ethernet really isn't supported.

Michael
