a configuration question..

After getting my tivo I've had to make some changes to my components' configuration. A problem I have encountered is with my television's inputs. I own a SONY trinitron KV-32S40. The TV has a cable coax in, an S video in, and a regular video/audio in (the red, white, and yellow standard plugs).
The problem is when I send my DVD output to the S and then try to plug my VCR into the regular (red/white/yellow). When the S cable is plugged into the back of my TV, I cannot get the video from the VCR to appear (I do get the sound). This happens even if the DVD is turned off. To watch a VCR tape, I have to unplug the S input. So, the S is overriding the regular video input (yellow). Is there anyway to get around this?
Thanks.

Most of these sets do not allow you to use the S-Video and RCA video connections for a given input (e.g. "Video 1") independently. Usually the S-Video connection takes priority, even if that component is powered off.
Your best bet would be an A/V switcher. Many of the them now also switch S-Video connections. For example, Radio Shack provides:

Thanks. I picked one up and it took care of a number of problems I have had. Is it possible that running components through the selector could degrade video quality? It seems a little worse, but I'm not sure. Thanks again.
