I have a att tivo that i upgrade with a 2 drive hack to 140 hrs. I made an image backup of the original tivo drive.
i am anticipated either 1 or both of the drives failing at sometime, in which case, i want to be able to pop in 2 new drives and get going.
here is the question. im going to do the home media option. if at some time after i download 4.0, my drives burn up on me, and then i do a restore from my old 3.0 image, will my tivo redownload 4.0?
cheers.

It's should, I just restore the image on my Philips SA it had 2.0.1 and after set it up it download the latest software version.

Yup - this has always worked in the past. Obviously, no one outside of TiVo can guarantee this, but this is the way they've always operated.
Beyond that, the upgrade community really does make an effort to back up the latest versions of their software so as not to put undue stress on TiVo's servers (each software update takes a fair amount of time on the dial-in lines and costs TiVo some money).

Good point about strain on the tivo servers....but im using the usb ethernet/internet connection for program updates. I am assuming that any updates to the software will be made available via that channel of distribution. I can't wait for the ethernet connection to be fully supported under 4.0.
Cheers.

Yes - they'll come over the ethernet, so no strain on the PPP servers (and no cost). Some minute strain on the hosting server, but shouldn't be a big deal.
