Restoring A drive image from another Tivo
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Due to a fairly major disaster I need to restore an A drive image from a friends existing A drive (from exactly the same model and software version - Thomson Secnium).
Having put the friend's drive into the Tivo to test it - Tivo simply hangs at the initial grey screen. Its almost as if it has detected a different serial number.
Is there any reason why the friends A drive wont boot?
If so is there any way to use my friends drive to create a new working A drive. (The friend's A drive has always been used as a single drive)
Thanks for any help.

I really don't have experience with the UK TiVos, but for the US standalones, moving drives between identical-model units isn't a problem. Even with DirecTiVos where the software tracks the serial number, you can reset the software and make it work - in any case, it boots.
Are you sure your hardware is OK?

The thing that is puzzling me is that my screwed up A drive gets as far as as the second grey screen and then reboots and repeats the cycle.
My friends (apparently good) A drive gets to the first grey screen and then the drive stops all activity. I suppose its possible that the friends A drive has failed.
By placing in my aborted B Drive I can get to the GSOD.
I have considered hardware failure but does it seem possible given the above?

Have you tried placing your 2 drives in your friend's unit? That might help you figure out if it is a disk or hardware problem...

Happily my Tivo is back up and running and upgraded.
I think my difficulties were down to a number of coincidences.
1) Friends spare Tivo drive was damaged - did not boot in his Tivo either
2) The IDE cable in my machine was dodgy - new cable in place everything started working
3) Earlier incompetance on my part in screwing up the jumper settings on my new drive - so that the drive was blessed for 120Gb but jumpered for 32Gb - Tivo became very confused and corrupted
Many thanks to everyone that helped out.
