Why is NBC trying to kill ED?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What in the world are they thinking moving Ed to Friday night? They are idiots!

My "must see" Wednesday nights just got a little less "must see"

Posted by: TivoZorro

Oh, I hope they aren't trying to kill Ed! It's one of my favorites. When I saw it show up on a Friday on my To Do List I wondered if they were doing this the two weeks that Survivor is airing in the Wednesday 8:00 PM timeslot so that they (Ed) wouldn't have to suffer in the ratings. Is this a permanent move to Friday? Did they announce something on tonight's show? I'm two weeks behind in watching Ed.

They need the room for another "Date My Grandmom's Fearfully Hot Millionaire Bachelor Nephew."

Ed is on Fridays? I thought it was just on TiVo...

yeah, all through the show tonight they announced that Ed was moving to Fridays.

I checked Yahoo since I am on the web and they show Dateline on next Wednesday in Eds timeslot

It's only temporary. In March, CBS usually moves Survivor to Wednesday night because they air NCAA tournament games on Thursdays. They are apparantly also using this to test it out in a later timeslot.

Let's hope they fail the test and move it back to Wed. then.

Posted by: Graymalkin

No, when they fail the test, they get canceled, and the producers get the blame. Network suits never accept responsibility.

Posted by: hawkamer

Wasn't Providence on Friday night? Uh-oh.

Last year, Ed was one of the last big network shows to be renewed. If they don't get good ratings on Friday, I think this season will be the last. Which is a shame, because any show capble of producing the "Lucid Dream" episode deserves to be renewed.

I love Ed. I'm willing to cut off NBC if they move it to Friday to torpeo it.

It's my favorite show on TV, and it would break my heart to lose it.

Posted by: steelcurtain

Man, I just started watching it. I wouldn't be happy if I cursed it!

Posted by: justapixel

Ed's great. I hope this move doesn't hurt the show. It does seem like all my favorite shows end up being cancelled.

It seems a little strange that a TiVo user would question WHEN a show is aired? I guess IMHO it doesn't really matter, when it shows up on my TiVo I'll watch it.

Well, it aint easy to TiVo a show when it's CANCELLED!!!!

Friday is usually the kiss-of-death for a show...

I may be strange, but if a show I like is on, like Ed, I usually watch it about an hour after its TiVoed...I watch Ed and West Wing between 8 and 9:30 before the news...so yes, right now I do care what day it's on...

Posted by: jsmeeker

Indeed. Friday night is the crappiest time slot in television.

In the case of network television, Friday night is an ultimate ratings-killer and easily leads to cancellation of many a series. I don't think the move is temporary. I heard the announcement (as far as I remember): "Next week, Ed moves to Friday nights."

I stopped watching the show half-way thru last season, as much as I love the Ed character (and Tom Cavanaugh as an actor), I despise the direction Carol was headed, so I stopped watching. Easy as that. I'm from a small town, that was the appeal. It just seemed her character became a stereotype and lost direction.

BTW, how did Kenny get written off the show? Do I have the right character here? I know someone left this season...

If anything, CBS would be nuts not to pick the show up since the producer and exec producer (Letterman) are there as well.

But like my quote says...

Good point, except for one minor point: Ed airs on NBC, not CBS. Other than that, good argument. ;)

It does not help that it will be opposite John Doe, which does cause a conflict for me.

And like others have said Friday a death night for many shows.

That wouldn't stop CBS from picking up the show if NBC chooses not to renew. The situation described has happened many a time (well, just a few actually) when the original network fails to renew a show. One example would be that Sabrina the Teenage Witch show.

Posted by: cancermatt

Thanks, Justin. That's what I was trying to say... if NBC keeps ED on Fridays, it'll surely be cancelled... and CBS should then pick it up...

all a possibility :)

Posted by: DancnDude

I heard there are only a few more Eds (I was thinking 3) left this season so they will run this season out on Fridays and then hopefully next season open up again on a different night.

Posted by: hawkamer

Friday night is the kiss of death, unless you are Law & Order: SVU. That show seems to do well in its Friday time slot. In fact, when CBS debuted Robbery Homicide Division opposite Law & Order, well, you know what happened.

Posted by: brahamt

Crossing fingers, toes, eyes, whatever it takes.

Though Ed has not been on a creative high much this year (the dream episode being the notable exception), this is still a good show. I hope they don't cancel it.

I know I am beating a dead horse, but once people leave network TV for a lack of quality, they will be less inclined to come back.

While Friday is considered the worst of tv timeslots, it can help a good show develop an audience. Case in point:

X-Files: original timeslot: Friday @ 9pm
CSI: original timeslot: Friday @ 9pm (or was it 8?)

I'm sure there are other examples.

L&O:SVU is another good example, as someone else pointed out.

Ed has been shooting itself in the foot with the terrible way they have handled Ed/Carol this season. Perhaps it will "find" it's audience on Friday's with non-TiVo'ers -- b/c as a TiVo owner, I could really care less about when it actually airs. Actually, to me, this is good news -- something to look forward to watching on Fri or Sat night.

Posted by: thehepcat

Yes, Kenny did leave. But he popped up on Law & Order: C.I. a week or so ago as a dirty cop.

Posted by: firkat

I really like Ed too. I like the new character, Frankie. Imagine my surprise when I tuned into Sports Night, as recommended on this site. It has so many great characters that are now on West Wing, Frazier, Six Feet Under and even Ed. If you are not yet recording Sports Night, try it!

Posted by: brahamt

Though the DVD does not have any extras, it is worth buying. It was relatively cheap. I think I got it for $30 or so.

Posted by: hawkamer

Anyone catch the Daily Show last week? Tom Cavanagh was on, and they showed an outtake of him playing the old whoppie cushion prank on Sabrina Lloyd.

Posted by: Sleestak

Oh, great. That puts my top three Season Passes on Fridays at 9pm.

I might actually have to watch something live. :(

Posted by: Maui

ARRRGHHH

So my tivo picked up ED tonight and I forgot that I was going to have to manually catch John Doe...

So what happens, I forget to record John Doe and then when I go to watch ED on my tivo it is a repeat of Law and Order: Criminal Intent.

Now apparently I have to pay close attention to my ED season pass because when they finally air the episode that was meant to be on tonight Tivo won't record it because of the 28 day rule.

So let me once again say DAMN NBC for screwing with this shows timeslot.

Posted by: smak

It's too bad Dave has no pull at NBC anymore, that could make the difference between cancellation and renewal.

Whew. I thought the schedule was screwed up. So they didn't actually air that episode, right?

NBC is certainly trying to kill this series. Move it to a different night, and then don't actually air it. Not smart.

Posted by: thehepcat

There was a scrolling message across the bottom of the screen at one point saying that an all new Ed would air next Friday night. Hopefully it will be the one we were supposed to get this week.

Whew! Thanks. I turned it on to watch it last night and saw the Law & Order instead and thought I missed it because of the war coverage. Glad to hear it didn't air...

According to the NBC website, the episode originally scheduled to air Friday March 21 will be shown on Friday March 28.

Don't forget to check your season pass. Right now my season pass says it will record Ed but if they update the schedule to indicate that they will be showing the episode that was supposed to air last friday your season pass may not pick it up duee to the 28 day rule.
