Upgrading a HDVR2

Today I placed my order from DTV for my DirecTivo! I *should* be getting the HDVR2 unit.

I believe it comes w/ a 40 GB HD (35 hour). I'd like to remove the HD, and install a 120 GD HD in place of the orig. I have a couple questions about doing this...

I've looked at hinsdale's guide at I've got a couple questions...

1. I'll need a pc running Linux right?
2. What will I gain in hours by installing a 120 GB drive? (40 GB out, 120 GB in).

Is there a noticable difference between a 7200rpm, 8MB cache HD, or a 5400rpm, 2 MB cache HD?

I'm thinking about buying the Western Digital 120 GB " Special Edition".

What do you all think?

You'll need a PC - you don't need any Linux other than the boot disk that you can download.

You will gain hours as long as you either include the "x" in your restore string, or run mfsadd after the restore.

Some people claim a slight speed advantage with a larger cache and 7200 RPM drives, but we've never seen it. In general, the TiVo was built to operate with 5400 RPM drives, and so the architecture runs at a speed where that's plenty fast. Also, 7200s can generate more heat in the unit.

Don't forget the -s 127 switch which increases the swap space. This could be important should you ever decide to add a second drive.

The 40GB is 35 hours, the 120Gb is 105 hours according to the system information, although in reality on the 40Gb you will probably get around 25 hours, and on the 120 you will get around 70 hours.
