All American Girl

Last night, ABC premiered a new show called "All American Girl". It's a lot like "American Idol" (imagine that), except the contestants are all women and can show off any kind of talent, not just singing. The judges are former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell (who isn't American), former basketball player John 'Spider' Salley (!?!) (who isn't a Girl), and some other lady. The competition takes place on a stage at Disney's California Adventure theme park, thus giving Disney/ABC a way to draw more people to the park, to watch the tapings.

As usual, some of the contestants were talented and some were just weird.

I have no idea why John Salley is one of the judges.

I didn’t catch this one, but it sounds from the ratings like I wasn’t the only one. The ratings were really bad for this thing, worst ABC’s had in that timeslot this year. From what I read it even finished behind “60 Minutes II” in the 18-49 demo. So I guess the point is for those watching don’t get too attached, since I can’t see how ABC will keep this on the air much longer.
This is like the third reality tv show in a row to debut to dismal ratings, with “The Family” and “Married By America” both doing pretty poorly. People are free to watch whatever they want as far as I’m concerned, but I must say I’m happy to see we might finally be reaching the point of over-saturation with the reality television fad. A personal thanks from me to all the short sighted execs that burst this bubble well before it could run its natural course.

ABC is run by knuckleheads.

In case nobody noticed this show (and I watched the entire two hours which means I should seek professional help), has the same producers as American Idol.

This leads me to believe that this show was probably pitched to Fox first and rejected by them.

The ratings for this show were an abysmal 3.0 -- even "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!" did better than that.

This may be the long-awaited beginning of the end for the reality craze. Thank God!

I thought this thread was gonna be about the Margaret Cho show!

I caught another episode of this on ABC Family last night. They narrowed it down to three "teams" of five, each of which is being "coached" by one of the judges. This show involved seeing if the women could sing, and of course some were good at it and some were not. Later in the show, each coach had to let a team member go.

I still don't know why they picked John Salley to "coach" people in show business, but he was gamely trying anyway. Geri Halliwell could probably actually coach them, but she spent more time criticizing and seemed somewhat aloof.

This is a weird show.

Gaah! Someone beat me to the punch on the Margaret Cho joke!

I thought, "Oooh, I love Margaret Cho" and clicked this thread. Damn...

I caught the very end of this last night. It continues to be weird. They were going through some convoluted voting process to decide whether to bring back the people who were eliminated last week by the coaches or to eliminate someone else who was selected by the contestants.

Last night All American Girl was preempted for war coverage. (And also so The Bachelor could run five-plus minutes long!) This episode was supposed to be on the live stage and at the end America was supposed to get a chance to call in and eliminate two of the ten remaining contestants.

Now there will be a two-hour special on April 17. This week's episode will be shown, then a panel of industry experts will eliminate two, then it will carry on with the finale (not sure how it will be judged).

As usual this show continues to be weird.
