Max Out Upgrade?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Suppose money and time wasn't an issue...

How large of an upgrade is possibe?

From what I have read, 2 x 120 gb is the max?
Why not 2 x 200 gb?

What would be the 'dream machine'?

Advise to make a dream come true?

The safe limit of TiVo drives is 137 GB. Some have gone beyond this, but not with stability. So 200 GB doesn't really help any more than 160 GB.

So I should buy 2 @ 160 GB or 2 @ 120?

They don't sell 137 GB drives.....

I think the dream machine consists of 2 internal hard drives (500 gigz each), an external USB 2.0 drive (500 gig, used to transfer video to your computer), and a free space indicator that says "1.5 terrabytes free".

2 x 160GB is the only way to get to 2 x 137GB drives.

btw www.ptvupgrade.com has found a way to higher capacity drives using a patch to the kernel

What do you mean by this? ptvupgrades has offered this for a long time. are you saying they would sell an unstable product? their longstanding reputation around here is good. unless you have some basis for making a statement like this, it sounds more like an excuse for not offering similar capability.

I think the comment may have been referring to the fact that a software upgrade from TiVo very likely will crash the whole thing if you running the hack that allows >137. I doubt it was a personal attack.

Actually, we were just talking about this thread:

Not an attack at all - just referencing what others have said in this thread.

Hi Folks,
Actually, the "others" are wrong. The high capacity upgrade kits that PTVupgrade sells are rock solid. Infact, I would not be a bit suprised if TiVo would upgrade their OS to support this as standard. :)

As most "oldtimers" around here know, PTVupgrade was the first company to start selling TiVo upgrade kits and they have always kept ahead of the pack. 9thTee is the exclusive distributor for their upgrade kits and I can assure you that if they sell it, it is good.

Just because PTVupgrade is the only one to sell the higher capacity upgrades does not make it bad. Just means nobody else has figured it out.

I have a great deal of respect for PTVupgrade in breaking through the 137GB limit, of course they are good, of course they are reputable.

But, I'm a little uncomfortable about praising proprietary solutions in this forum.

I always thought that the ethos around here was one of everyone pitching in to help us ALL to enjoy our remarkable toys.

Advice is freely given and when something is found or developed it is shared.

I think everyone appreciates that there is a very genuine market for people and companies to provide products and services support for those who aren't willing or able (for whatever reason) to do upgrades for themselves. But the underlying principle is that these services are in support of self help, not instead of'.

So, getting back to the ORIGINAL question, "Suppose money and time wasn't an issue... How large of an upgrade is possible?", sadly, the answer at present is, "you'll have to ask PTVupgrade".

Our answer to this question:

Currently, the largest we are making available is 450 HRS, using (2) 180GB drives (larger is actually possible, however). There has been limited demand for these kits, so there are not many in service. We've had no reports of instability or reliability problems associated with the software technology used to make this possible.
