External Hayes Modem Problem! HDR312
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I followed all of the instructions to enable external modem use. Upgrade to 3.0 on the HDR312 went well with Hinsdale help. Wonderful work on that. It was almost fun.
Got Hayes Accura 28.8 modem. Did the following:
ATZ
AT&d0&k0&r1&w0
at&d0&k0&r1&w1
That seemed to work fine.
Hooked up to TIVO via home made cable, per this site, as follows:
Pin 2 - tip
pin 3 - middle Ring
Pin 7 - (main shaft of the mini stereo cable)
Pins 4 &5 jumpered
Pins 6 & 20 Jumpered
Checked all connections.
Put ,#319 in place of ,#420 to set at 19.2K
Modem lights do NOTHING when setting up and dialing. modem has TR light on solid - is this normal? Error says MODEM NOT RESPONDING.
Am I screwed? Bought this via EBAY with blown modem (did not know that when I bought it- as is sale, as usual). Manual mode works fine.
Any suggestions most welcome.
Thanks.

Well, I found my problem. DUH! I never used Hyperterminal before and apparently I needed to say I wanted to talk directly to COM1. Once I did that, all went well. Sorry for being an alarmist!
Hey - at least this forum gives me a place to make a fool of myself. I would have been lost without it.
