Bad Drive - What To Do

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My TiVo has been rebooting, freezing up, and stuttering. I upgraded in September, but the problems have only been going on for about a month or so.

A friend upgraded my machine for me since I am an idiot when it comes to things like this. Keeping in mind that he actually doesn't have a Linux box to check the disc on, could someone please give me step by step instructions on what to do next? I need to ask his help, but I would feel a lot better about it if I could provide him with instructions instead of going, "It's not working. Please research and fix."

Thanks so much in advance!

Kymberlie,
Have you checked the internal Temp of your machine? Sometimes a failing fan can give you these symptoms.

We opened it up and looked for loose connections and it didn't seem to be hot. The fan still worked as well, so I don't think it's that. Thought did cross my mind, though.

You don't need Linux to check the integrity of the disk - just a PC with DOS. The tools from the major manufacturers (Maxtor, Samsung, WD) don't even work on Linux.

So you should do a test and see where you are. But if you get an "A-OK" from the utility - it could still be the drive that is causing the problems. The constant and disorderly read and write from the TiVo seems to put a lot more stress on a drive than the simple tests from the manufacturers.

I had the same problem with an upgraded Tivo. 40gb plus a new 120gb.

Pulled the new B drive out and run Maxtor utility, failed the test and I RMA'd the drive.

It's a PITA to do, but in the end, the playback on the exchanged drive is perfect and it's all worth it.
