Worst Episode Ever for Simpsons

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Big_Daddy

Okay, this thread sprung from the recent C.E. D'oh thread, where it was claimed to be the worst episode ever. I disagree - "Simpsons Safari" was, IMHO, without a doubt the worst episode ever.

What does everyone else think?

Posted by: JYoung

New Kids on the Blech.
It's the episode in which I feel the series officially jumped the shark.

I thought New Kids on the Blech was funny. Worst episode ever for me is "So It Has Come To This: The Simpsons Clip Show".

Posted by: TeeSee

For me it was the one where Homer became the captain of a nuclear submarine, and just about everyone else in town were crew members. It was so ludicrous that I'm not even sure if the jokes on the show were funny or not. I just couldn't get over the fact that the producers actually OK'd the script.

If the show hadn't jumped the shark by then, it had at that point.

Safari was pretty bad, too.

(unoriginal slaps JYoung for improper use of the phrase "jumped the shark")

If by "Improper use", you mean he is simply wrong, then <mcmahan>YOU ARE CORRECT SIR!</mcmahan>.

Still freakin hilarious, after all these years.

(smaks unoriginal back across the side of the head)

No, it's not. N'Sync were the guest stars and Bart and co were turned into a boy band.
For a show that has it's roots in counter culture, this episode was a sell out for embracing N'Sync.

But I'd assert, while the Simpsons does have its roots in counter culture and certainly will poke fun at anything, it has sold out on occasion. Such as the episode with the character Jay Sherman from "The Critic." ("A Star is Burns", I believe) Isn't that the one where Matt Groenig refused to have his name on the credits?

Thankfully these are few and far between. I tend to think of the N'Sync episode as poor writing rather than a sellout. I still don't think that episode was the worst. I stand by Safari.

Oh, and I wouldn't put clip shows as worst episodes - at least they try to highlight funny scenes from previous episodes, rather than have a whole-new unfunny episode. But to each their own.

Here's another to ponder: "Tales from the Public Domain." Also very bad. I always delete it whenever the rerun pops up on my Tivo.

I dunno. That asteroid shooting into Homer's butt is worth putting up with the "bathe the hobo" jokes.

I stand corrected.

I'm not as versed as most, but the two that pop into mind are the "Behind the Music" type episode, and the reality TV episode. The safari one was bad, but at least I don't remember how painful it was. The two I mentioned still burn in my memory...

Nah, it's still a pretty poor episode.

Just goes to show, though, that it's hard to discount entire shows because there's always at least one thing that is pretty darned funny.

Bad Simpsons is still better than most "good" programming.

That's one of my favorites. It's on my bedroom TiVo with a SUID.

Could that be another difference????

If you're referring to the one where the Simpsons live in the house from the 1890's, then I detested that episode. It's been shown 3 times this season, and was only aired back in December. Ugh!

(The joke about Mutt and Jeff, however, was quite funny)

I wholeheartedly agree.

Perhaps, but to me, the N'Sync episode started the whole downward spiral that has continued until a couple of recent efforts.

Aha! I wasn't asking which episode was the leading edge of a decline in quality, but which episode was the worst!

Keep in mind I love the Simpsons. Even the bad episodes are better than [insert random Fox reality show here]. Like most, I feel even bad episodes have a few good redeeming qualities. I was overall disappointed by the recent C.E.D'oh episode, but loved seeing the Republican Party again, loved seeing Burns surf the crowd and get thrown into the taxi, loved seeing Homer below Frank Grimes and the inanimate carbon rod.

There have been some rays of sunshine this last season - starting with the Clones segment for this year's Treehouse of Horrors. Hopefully next season will be even better.

AND I wish Fox would speed the release of DVD's!

When Nsync entered the warehouse(?) and walked over to Bart and Milhouse to the beat of that song, I almost fell out of my chair laughing. It seemed to me that the writers were making fun of boy bands not endorsing them...

My vote is for "Saddlesore Galactica" from a couple of years ago, where they meet the pixie jockeys or whatever they were.

I think the show's been improving gradually for the past year or so, and the recent Krusty-for-Congress episode was the best thing they've done in many years.

My vote goes to the episode where the Simpsons go to Japan (that might as well be the title). I hardly find a laugh in that one.

"Sadlesore Galactica". Just the parts with the creepy jockeys is bad, the rest of the episode is funneeeeee.

Homer: if he loses [the horse], we'll be taking a trip to the glue factory... and he won't get to come.:D

I agree. Most of it was funny, but the last act with the jockeys... I remember thinking that someone must have had too much beer (or something more illegal) when they wrote that part. It wasn't funny, just bizarre.
