Can't get USB>Ethernet to work on S2

Yesterday I received a new 80 Hour Series 2, straight from TiVo. I was previously using a HDR312 30 Hour (Series 1) on my network with a TurboNet card installed. That little bugger ran great, so I cancelled my land line months ago and did updates via ethernet. Upon ordering the Series 2 model, I sold my Series 1 and waited anxiosly for the upgrade.

I set everything up as it had been with my Series 1. Bought a Linksys USB100M adaptor and plugged it into my network. Entered the ,#401 for the connect number... Powered the unit off (for over 30 seconds) and started it up again.

I've gone through this process about 20 times already, trying different methods of powering down, plugging and unplugging (USB port 1 & port 2), etc. No matter what I do, I can't get the TiVo to connect. It does the "Preparing to Call" bit, gets through that and then fails approximately 30 seconds into "Dialing..."

The setup worked on my Series 1 with the TurboNet card flawlessly, so I'm pretty sure it's not my network. I even checked the DHCP client table on my router and can see that the TiVo is there, using a .103 IP. I even ping'd it -- and it shows up! So I'm pretty sure the USB>Ethernet adaptor is working -- and wouldn't it seem that the USB port on the TiVo is working as well if I'm able to ping it?

Since this is a brand new model, I shouldn't have to dial up to set it up first, right? If that's what I need to do, I'm in trouble -- since I no longer have a land line.

Is it possible that there's a problem on TiVo's end with the ,#401 extension right now? I tried calling customer service and was greeted by a 35-minute wait time. Maybe others are having broadband connection problems right now, too? Or could my TiVo just be defective?

Any thoughts? I'm pulling my hair out.

I am waiting on delivery of my router and USB100 (due today). I have read in the Underground section that you will have to do the land line set up the first time. I have even seen the suggestion that you take it to a neighbor if you don't have a phone.

Hope this helps

if its any consolation I have the exact same problem, except I used my phone line for guided setup. however I can't get the tivo to connect through the ethernet at home, even though it works fine if I lug it into work and connect it here.

tried all sorts of connection variations at home and nothing has worked. its getting an ip, tivo is setup with the ,#401 and yet nada, zilch.
its very frustrating.
neither the tivo 1 or 2 will work at home and I can find no possible reason for it whatsoever.

As it turns out, I did need to connect over a land line for the first time. Took my TiVo over to a friend's house and went through the phone connection set up process. Took it home, plugged in the USB>Ethernet adaptor and *voila* it works.

I'm guessing that even though this is an 80-hour Series 2 unit, it probably was not running the necessary v3.x -- meaning that it did not have the proper USB drivers. I'm now running v3.2 and everything is a-okay.

I was thinking that lack of 3.2 software might have been the problem, but I really don't think any S2 80s shipped without it. Does anyone remember for sure?

I just purchased a linksys usb100m. I hooked everything up. I have a cable modem connected to a linksys router connected to a netgear hub, and a cat 5 cable going from the hub to the usb ethernet adapter. When I first hooked everything up and entered the ,#401 the usb adapter had no lights on. Then I read that I had to power down the Tivo for min. 5 min. After I did that, I did get a solid light on the adapter. But now am still unable to make the test call.
I have a series 2 80 hour tivo with software version 3.2 and originally set it up with a phone line. I'm not a networking guru, but I am able to see in the admin tool that my Linksys router is DHCP enabled.
When I make the test call I get these results:
Preparing - Done
Dialing - Done
Connecting - Failed while negotiating

Any suggestions? Is there something I overlooked?

Thanks in advance.

I'm getting the Failed while negotiating message too. Setting up the Tivo for the first time, and using the same equipment you are.

Success....

Try the bottom USB port. I did that on someone else's suggestion, and it work. It may well be that I didn't have all the connections firmly seated, but hey, it's working now.

Hope this helps!

I tried both usb ports a few times, still no luck.

I had to unplug the Tivo before I plugged it into the bottom port, and then it worked. Plugging it in with the power already on didn't work.

I have the same problem. It gets to "connecting" and fails at "configuring". I'm getting a correct ip address. I tried rebooting, p[owering off and both USB ports on the TIVO. Same problem with failure during configuration. I'm dead in the water now.
