Will I Get Local Channels?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I heard Louisville, KY is getting local channels this summer, but will I have to live in the city to receive them? I'm about 45 miles away and would love to get local broadcasts. Thanks for your input.

What is your zip code?

40601, in Frankfort, KY. Pegasus serves my area, but unlike DirecTV's site, theirs doesn't say "locals coming soon".

Since the Louisville spot beam isn't up yet, I can't find a map that will show it.
Chances are that you would assuredly be in the area to pick them up. These beams are pretty big. Even the smallest circumference ones are still huge.
However, the question of if you will "technically" be able to get them based on your address is different. Just because you are inside the spot beam doesn't mean that you would be allowed to get them.
Right now it looks like you could be getting locals from Columbus, OH if you provided DirecTV with a Columbus address.
My brother lives in College Station, TX but can get Dallas locals by telling DirecTV that his address is somewhere in Dallas.

Thanks for checking on that. Is providing a false address technically illegal? And if not, would I be able to do it even though I just established service last month?

I'm not sure if it's illegal. It may be. Someone in the DirecTiVo forum would probably know.
It's a bit in the gray area, at least.
The biggest downside is that you can't order PPV with your receiver. If it calls into DirecTV, then it will know you are not where you say you are.
I'd really be surprised if you weren't able to get Louisville locals when they come up. Can you get them now with an antenna? Are they the locals you'd get with cable?

It's not illegal. It's illegal for DirecTV to knowingly provide you with locals you're not entitled to. But it's not illegal for you, as a customer, to provide them with false information. Just leave your billing address as the one in Frankfort, and give DTV a Columbus address as your "service address".
As for them backtracking the phone number, they don't do use it for that purpose. As long as the number it calls from is on your account (home #, work #, etc.) then it's okay. If you have more than one DTV receiver, they both/all have to be connected to the same phone line, because they also use the ANI (CallerID) for that.
