"Powering Up" message

For the past 3 days I've been experiencing a problem with my HDRV2, and was wondering if it's possibly due to my recent upgrade.

Background info: I recently added a Maxtor 120GB HD, with the new Weaknees bracket. I've been monitoring the internal temp, and it's always been between 32-35 degrees. It's been working great since the upgrade, until 3 days ago.

The problem: When I turned on my TV Saturday morning, I was faced with the "Powering Up" screen. Not sure why it might have rebooted, I let it do it's thing. After killing some time doing other things, I checked back about an hour later: still "Powering Up." So, I unplugged the unit then plugged it back in a few seconds later. This time, it completed the power up, and a few minutes later all was well.

It worked flawlessly the rest of the day. Sunday morning, however, I once again got the "Powering Up" message, and was forced to do another reboot. This time, I left it unplugged for about a minute before plugging it back in. Again, it worked flawlessly the rest of the day.

I checked this morning (Monday) before leaving for work, and once again had to reboot. I'm thinking something is happening during the call-in...I checked the System Information screens and found the following info:

The last successful Call In attempt was Friday night. The next scheduled call is Tuesday night (tomorrow.) However, the next screen has something about downloading system information, that has a date/time of 3/24/03 at 2:30am.

Any ideas?

Thanks...

I should probably clarify what I did during my upgrade, as I did make a change, and forgot to mention it in my previous post.

I had *originally* added a 120GB drive as a second drive. Later, I decided I could use the original 40GB drive for something else, and re-did my upgrade. I copied the original drive to the new 120GB drive using the Hinsdale instructions for *replacing* an existing drive. So, I now have a single 120GB drive...

Not sure if that makes a difference, but I definitely made it sound as if I simply ADDED a drive. (Which I had originally done, and have now updated my sig to reflect the new setup.)

Sorry for the confusion.

My initial guess is that one of your hard drives is failing. I'd recommend trying the the manufacturer's diagnostics on the drive while connected to your PC. (Be careful, don't boot into Windows XP with a TiVo drive attached!) However, manufacturer's tests sometimes say the drive is ok even if the TiVo doesn't like it.

Or, if you are comfortable with unix, you could put the A drive in your PC, boot one of the upgrade CDs, mount the /var partition, take a look at the logs, and try to see what it was doing. However, this is not simple, and there are no how-to's that I'm aware of which walk you thorugh the various problems that could be reported.

Or, you could try replacing your hard drives and see if that fixes the problem.

Bill,

Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at the drive and see if any of the logs make sense. It's a new drive, so that would suck if it's failing. At least I could always go back to the original 40GB drive. (I made a backup image.)
