Linux newbie needs help!!!

Today I received my Samsung 120 GB HD to add to my Hughes DirecTiVo GXCEBOT, but couldn't find the Hinsdale How-To. Then I found the how-to in the MFS Tools readme.

Here's my problem (I think): In the "Backing Up A Single Drive TiVo" section, I followed all instructions, and originally typed "mount /dev/hda /mnt/dos" which didn't work, so after begging, a kind soul emailed a copy of Hinsdales, which has the line, but has "hda1" in the line instead of just "hda".

Now, after continuing by typing the "mfsbackup -6so /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc" and pressing enter, I just get the message "/mnt/dos/tivo.bak: Read only file system." I also noticed that it's only reading the drive at about 30GB when the first time it did read it at 120GB. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What OS are you running on the PC? If you're doing NTFS, Linux can only do read-only on it.

I don't understand what you're saying about the "reading the drive at 30GB"?

I'm running XP Home Edition. When I initially boot up with the MFS Tools 2.0, it reads the available space on my new 120GB HD as approx. 30GB.
But I read in the How-To that if it's "locked" it would only read 9-10MB.

I set it up just like the How-To suggests: hda=PC's C Drive, hdb=new large drive, hdc=original TiVo A drive (40GB) and hdd=CD-ROM.

Thanks again.

The problem with your 120 GB drive is likely that its jumpered to <32GB. Check the jumper settings watching carefully to make sure you aren't reading them upside down.

Do you know how your HD in your PC was formatted? It needs to have a FAT partition - or you can just skip making the backup and write the image directly to the new drive.

You were right on both counts! Thanks so much!!!

I was hoping to use both the original 40GB and the new 120GB, but using just the 120 should be fine for my purposes. My daughter needed a new HDD anyway, so I'll give her the 40!
