TiVo & Picasa - How HMO gets its pix

Kept forgetting to post this, the HMO stuff just reminded me...

The Boston Globe reported last month (2/17/2003) on the annual DEMO conference. In with the summaries was one interesting one:

Idealab managing director Lars Perkins and former Polaroid exec Ed Chao want to make it easier for you to share your digital snapshots. They'll unveil the Picasa Sharing Network, a way for users of the Picasa photo cataloging software to easily swap pictures over the Internet with other users of the software. The latest release also allows Picasa users to store their photo albums on a TiVo Series 2 digital video recorder for display on a TV set. The $29.95 Picasa software was originally introduced late last year by Lifescape, the Back Bay company that Perkins and Chao cofounded.

Unsurprisingly (?) Lifescape's website hasn't the word "tivo" anywhere on it. However well known techfolk Dan Gilmore also refers to Picasa's TiVo demo here: http://weblog.siliconvalley.com/col...es/000803.shtml

My guess is the Boston Globe report has it a bit backwards; one will probably be able to store one's images on the PC drive and "share" them (using ZeroConf?) to the TiVo. That would fit better with Picasa's features and how TiVo has described this HMO feature.

For those wanting to take a look for themselves at Picasa its free for 15 days/$30 thereafter at: http://www.lifescapeinc.com/picasa/

Of course we might well all be able to download a TiVo-specific version of Picasa before those 15 days are up...

ps Make a copy of this posting, it might go *poof* soon!
