OK, first off, the bit with Ray that opens the episode was bad. Given how it later turns out the scene ends, it's cheap and makes no sense; they were obviously just going for effect without reason.
That said, this episode does something that I think this show does fairly often and very well--it reaches the point where a lesser show would end (in this case, the conversation between Fearless and Joel), and then keeps going, packing an entirely unexpected wallop.
Yes, I miss the overlapping shifting viewpoints, but this show is just so dang good, it doesn't really need them.

Agreed, outstanding show. I liked the opening seen with Ray because it seems like they're maybe making an attempt at the whole time shifting/different perspectives thing again.

I guess, but in this case it was just a cheap gimmick. There's no reason on Earth Ray would have gone through that whole "how to kill the guy" speech if there were just a wrench in the bag. It was done purely for effect, with no regard whatsoever for logic; it added nothing but annoyance to the story. If they're going to do the time-shifting (and I certainly don't object!), then they should do it right. This wasn't that.
But still, that was a fairly minor glitch in a very good episode, and to my mind emphasizes how little this show needs to rely on gimmicks.

One of the reasons that this show need no gimmick is the awesome cast.
Of course, it is the show where all of the out of work actors from Band of Brothers show up. Not exactly a bad thing.

Is anyone else surprised at how the "New Kid" is?
I've only seen him in Ransom and Sixth Sense before this. His listing on IMDB is pretty long, but I haven't seen any of that other stuff.

I was thinking about this quite a bit last night after the show, and what I came up with to rationalize Ray's "how to kill the guy" speech was that perhaps he was seeing if Fearless would take the bag.
When Fearless *did* pick up the bag, it showed something to Ray, which is why he gave Joel a heads up that Fearless was going to go there (a "little birdie" told Joel that Fearless would be there).
Just a thought. A way of explaining the cheap gimmick, which I thought was just a hook as well until I started to think about why it might have worked into the show more than being a gimmick.

I just watched this and I'll have to go along with what Cynthia said that Ray was testing Fearless and his reaction would decide whether or not Ray would say anything to Joel or not.
Still, this shows why this show is one of the best on.

He is good. Real good. Check out Band of Brothers. Four actors from BoB have shown up on Boomtown, two are regulars. Neal McDonough and Donnie Wahlberg are the regulars, the detective with the beard and the officer whose partner was kidnapped are the others.
I think Cynthia hit the nail on the head with regards to Ray. I didn't find it cheap at all. Ray had to judge how the situation was going to go down.

Great, great episode.
Did anyone else notice that Mykelti Williamson (Fearless) was give a "story by" credit for this episode?

I didn't. Nice. Actors involved in the writing process is really quite rare, especially in a drama.

Great show as almost always. Gotta love "Fearless". He, Whalberg's character, Ray and the DA are great characters. My fav is the reporter, for disgusting male reasons.
And I agree with Cynthia's analysis FWIW.

Very good episode. Great acting! And I will second the suggestion of watching Band Of Brothers to see another very good role for Wahlberg.
That being said this episode even more so than most completely broke the mold that I thought was supposed to be the main gimic of the show. Fearless, Ray and Joel were shown in this episodes but the other characters were relegated to cameos or did not appear at all (was either of the female characters in it?)
All that being said I still enjoyed it and the writing and acting is better then most shows. I do miss the original concept.

She (Nina Garbiras) was in a show on Showtime called Leap Years, which was on one season and got axed. I actually liked it alot, mainly because of the unusual format - they switched between 3 time periods: 1993, 2001, and 2008. I was intrigued. Did anyone else watch this? Off topic, I know, sorry.

So was the Russian chick Fearless was sleeping with the same one he saved from the Russian mob a few episodes back? I assume so, since she mentioned her daughter, but I don't remember what the woman in that episode looked like (or even what her name was.)

That's because the show was basically about him because he was abused as a child too.

I know this episode is a couple of weeks old now, but I just
got around to watching it, and if this isn't the BEST show on
television right now, its pretty darn close..... Wahlberg, Williamson,
and McDonough all deserve an emmy....... And Sunday's (4/13)
episode is being touted as one of the best yet in the series...
Can't wait..............

That's interesting. Did he mention that in an interview or something?

It was in People magazine the week before the show aired.

I still miss the multiple-angle format. I don't really notice it when I'm watching it, because it is still such a great show. But I do wish they'd bring it back, even if not every week.

Last night's episode was more episodic than they've been recently...kinda made me nostalgic for the good old days, back in November. :D

Agreed. Well acted too. You KNEW that David, the asst DA was not really guilty of H&R, but it was interesting how they tied in the poor alzheimers vic.

I liked last night's episode too. We've been seeing this downward slide by McNorris all season.
I wonder where they are going to take it next?

That was the actual club interior they used. I used to live less than a mile from Cheetah's although I don't remember any of the dancers as good looking as Susan Ward.
Which actually made me do a double take as I remember her from the soap opera Sunset Beach, in which she played the Kansas farm girl......

I'm really interested in seeing where they're going to take the David McNorris character, too. It just feels like they're leading up to something… Seems to me, they might not want to keep both him and Andrea on the show for much longer; that kind of sub-plot usually burns itself out pretty fast. His looks just really creep me out.
Interesting note: Kinda fun to look at what the different stars currently have in development. Next season,
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Jason Gedrick (Tom Turcotte)
seems to be starting a new series. Wonder if that'll play out in the series finale…
