A new low for "The Practice"

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: omnibus

The 3/31 episode was half soap opera and half diatribe against the Republican party.

I'm very close to giving up what used to be one of my favorites.

Posted by: michad

Just waiting for the chick to die....my better half and I have a bet on the outcome. Then the SP is gone.

Posted by: daperlman

I was pretty surprised that they specifically called out Ashcroft. It is the second practice where they have done that.

Posted by: brahamt

Not Democratic or Republican, but it seems to me there have been many references to politics in shows lately. The problem is they have all been heavy handed and completely lacking in focus. They seem more like rants than anything else.

I have no problem with anyone attacking Dems or Republicans, because frankly they are both morons. But have a good story to go along with the point of view instead of boring us with boorish rants.

My girlfriend watches this show. I can't stand it. I just go into the other room to watch an old Law & Order. Please, convince me, why is it worth (or used to be worth) watching? It seems like a bad L&O to me, am I wrong?

Sadly, I too deleted my season pass for The Practice last night. I've been one of the few who hasn't missed an episode since the VERY first! But, they have been REALLY bad these last few weeks...

Posted by: iceisles

I have always loved The Practice. While the last few weeks have been admittedly weak, I am more aggravated that ABC moved it to Monday nights opposite Raymond, etc. What was wrong with Sundays at 10? I think Dragnet (also a great show) followed by The Practice would have been a far better strategy.

Posted by: jgickler

We watched the last three episodes of the practice last night, and what is with the dropped story lines. In the first of the three we watched last night, the psycho child killer showed up and the serial killers house, and then this was dropped from the next two episodes. The assumption was that the serial killer was killed, but why drop the plot for two complete episodes.

Posted by: iceisles

The "assumed ending" of their shows has always been a question of mine, as well. This has never really bothered me, though, since I don't think most storylines need several full episodes to completely play out. My concern is for the continued longevity of the show. Does anyone here think that the move to Mondays will be the downfall for The Practice? After being repeatedly slapped around in the Nielsens, I feel ABC better move it to another, less competitive timeslot quickly, or begin engraving its tombstone.

Miracles is on after it. Watch that. It is good.

...(runs away)

I just watched about 40 minutes of the show, I could see that it was an attack on Republican policies. I stopped watching and deleted the show.

The Democrats just don't get it, the Republicans are in now and of course they do not do things like the Democrats do. (That's why they got elected)

I am removing "The Practice" from my season pass, this is not the only episode that was starting to bother me. Let the Democrats watch it.

Could someone summarize the episode for me? What was the anti-Republican diatribe about?

There's a high profile death penalty case in which the Feds step in and form a panel of prosecutors to decide on the punishment for an admitted murderer.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
the writer's anti-death penalty stand is voiced by Jimmy in a speech to the panel who eventually votes for life imprisonment without parole. Later in the show attorney general John Ashcroft is named and shown in a clip as he overides the decision and restores the death penalty in the case

Wow. That's pretty blatant. Didn't they do a Jimmy and Death Row ep a while back anyway?

It would be shocking if this were the first time they've tried to push a liberal agenda, but it happens so often that it's just become more of the same.

I don't think the move to Monday will be the practice's downfall, I think the decline in decent story lines will be its downfall.

Sorry, I don't get your disappointment with the story line. It's controversy. I'm a republican, I'm not offended.

What they proposed is possible. Hey, it's TV.

I never said I was offended by the bias, I was merely pointing it out in response to a previous post. If I cared about bias, my TiVo would be recording about one show a week.

My disappointment with all of their recent story lines, not just the last one is that they are disappointing. The show used to be a gripping, provoking hour of television, now it's garbage. How many times does your average lawyer get stalked by multiple psychopaths? And then this crumbling marriage thing? What a copout, it's like they dried up every other possible thing that could happen to Bobby and Lindsay, so now they're going to have to break them up. The only thing that could happen now is for one or both of them to be murdered. It's all gotten rather absurd. I keep watching hoping that each show will be good because I know what the show used to be like, but now I'm just hoping for ABC to pull the plug. Either that, or get rid of DEKelley, he's managed to make three great shows, and then foul each of them up.

Bob, I don't totally disagree with your points. Since the schedule has been so screwed up lately, in addition to my SP, I have a WL with keep 3 new/re-run USIN. So, I have recently been watching some of the 'old' episodes.

I'm not ready to give up on this yet. I think inside the hour each week there has been some compelling drama. I would have to say my only gripe right now is the scheduling, and TiVo's inability to consistently get it recorded.

Is it down a notch from some of the great shows of the past, probably. Is it all that bad. no.

I guess you and I will just have to agree to disagree. ;)

Yep. They love to dish it out like they did for 8 years at the Clintons, but say one bad word about the Bush administration and your Un-American.

Posted by: davidmin

I don't understand a couple things (may be spoilers)...

First, how is being pro-death penalty Republican and anti-death penalty Democratic? As far as I know, most Democrat politicians support the death penalty. And second, what is the problem with showing Ashcroft as supporting the Death Penalty? Doesn't he? Wouldn't you be glad to see that if you support the death penalty?

I don't have a problem with calling the episode "liberal" (though I didn't see it). How would a "conservative" writer have written this episode?

Well to start, they'd rename the series to The State.

This has nothing to do with The Practice, but I have a political question. How is it that the Republicans preach less government and then align themselves with a policy of having the Feds getting involved in murder cases? I mostly have voted Republican in national elections because I want the federal government off our backs. With many issues now the republicans seem to want a bigger role in federal government. This disappoints me.......... like The Practice recently.

Elected?

I thought Al Gore got elected. The Supreme court and Florida got Alfred E. Newman (Bush) in office.

I was glad they showed that right wing extremist (Ashcroft) in a poor light.

He, Cheny and the rest of their ilk have now got the country in a war and a budget that will cause the inflation to soar.

I have yet to see where Saddam has been shown to have been behind the bombing here. Actually, if any country can be blamed, it is Saudi Arabia that funded, indirectly, the whole Bin Laden thing.

You clearly do not understand how our electoral process works.

Al Gore lost the election.

The Supreme Court put a stop to recounting, they did not elect anybody.

Several media outlets went back and recounted the votes after the fact anyway, and the results remained unchanged in every recount that I am aware of.

You don't think I believe the mass media do ya ? ;)

I loved this episode. Not sure how anyone could think that this episode is a "new low" though.

Posted by: Tori

I already deleted the episode but would now like to review the part where they explained the grounds for trying it as a federal case. If anyone still has it could you please quote that portion of the dialogue to me. Just send a PM.

Thanks,

-Tori

Which chick are you referring to Helen or Lindsay? I think they are going to kill off Helen and if they do that then I'm gone along with my SP.

I thought it would be Helen, but the way they are screwing with Bobby and Lindsay I think it will be her.

I could be wrong.

Posted by: dssdbs

I wouldn't be surprised if Sarah turns up dead, with Lindsay being the possible suspect. She did warn her to stay away from Bobby.
