Sony DVR w/ DVD-R (hint hint nudge nudge)

Ok, if you can read japanese, check out http://www.sony.jp/CorporateCruise/...00304/03-0403/. Sony will be releasing a DVR/PVR in Japan April 12 which will record directly to DVD. Now I understand it's no Tivo...but wow...what I wouldn't give for that functionality!

You can translate the whole page rougly using http://www.babelfish.altavista.com.

Sounds neat, but $1,300MSRP puts it squarely in the filthy rich masochist-enthusiast range.

I'll keep my S2 TiVos. All three combined cost less than one of these even after the 120GB upgrades on them.

I haven't looked at the translation of that page, but there are already Panasonic and Toshiba hard drive recorders with DVD recorders also.. The prices seem to be fluctuating based upon web searches, but they're under $800 nowadays.. (sometimes about $750.)

Kind of interesting that they are using the DVD-R fomat. Maybe they will have either DVD+R or both DVD-R and +R if it comes to the US.
It's expensive. For $1200 people will soon be expecting HDTV also. It won't be long before you will be able to buy an HDVR2 plus a separate DVD recorder set top box for half that.

"Sony will release a digital video recorder with a hard drive and DVD recorder, as well as a broadband Internet connection and Web browser, the company has announced.

"The NDR-XR1, set to launch in Japan on April 12, goes a step beyond current cutting-edge DVR products. Some current and announced products, including devices from Toshiba and Panasonic, include a hard drive and DVD recorder, but Sony's is the first to add a broadband connection--used for program guide information and to access Web pages.

"Sony's NDR-XR1 is the latest new configuration to try to stoke consumer interest. It includes an 80GB hard disk, the ability to record in DVD-R/RW format, a DV link for importing footage from video cameras, a Memory Stick reader for importing still images, and playback of DVD-R/RW, DVD video and various CD formats.
