D-Link DWL 120 USB NIC - should work with HMO, $30-$35

Hey guys, I've been waiting for a decent deal on an 802.11b USB NIC since that's the type of wireless network I already have.
According to Pony's thread, the D-Link ones should work (thought I don't know what the V.A stuff is after the model name - firmware?)
Here's the deal, Office Depot has two promotions going on right now - $25 off $75 and $15 off $30 - Codes shamelessly ripped from this thread at FatWallet.
quote:
$15 off $30; code 92249434 [Exp 4/10] (mentioned before)
$10 off $30; code 48952508 [Exp ???]
$15 off $50; code 91641527 [Exp ???]
$25 off $75; code 90246756 [Exp 4/10]
$20 off $100; code 72614889 [Exp 4/10]
They have the NIC on their new site for $49.14 here - search for sku#616789 if the link doesn't work.
Free shipping on orders over $50, I believe, SO:
You can get one for: $49.14-$15= $34.14 plus shipping, plus tax.
Or if you're like me and you need two, you can do:
two for $98.28-$25= $73.28, plus tax, and you get free shipping.
Not bad, huh?
BTW, if you'd prefer the Microsoft 802.11b adapter mentioned in Pony's thread, you can get it for a similar price, BUT you have to deal with 2 mail in rebates. Details can be found here.

This was from Pony's earlier post...it seem that it depends on the Tivo serial number as to which D-Link adapter to buy...
Which Network Adapter To Buy...
HMO is just around the corner, and I'm sure many of you want to be all set up and ready to go on day one.
Well, Here's a sneak at the list of ethernet adapters that we've been testing with HMO. The only adapters officially recommended are the two Linksys products noted below. But there are several other makes and models that we've heard work just fine.
Anyways, I thought some of you might be ready to do some shopping...so here's the scoop:
TiVo recommends these USB network adapters:
Wireless Ethernet Adapter: Linksys WUSB11 ver. 2.6
Wired Ethernet Adapter: Linksys 100TX
Both are available from the TiVo Store
Other Wireless Adapters:
While we cannot recommend other adapters, we have reports of some success with a number of other makes and models of wireless USB network adapters. Some of these adapters are specific to a particular model of DVR. To identify which model you have, look at the first three digits of your DVR's 15 digit TiVo Service Number, and then check the list below. (You can find your DVR's TiVo Service Number by going to Messages & Setup and then System Information, or by looking on the label printed on the back of your DVR.)
We have had positive reports on these makes and models for all TiVo Series2 DVRs:
NetGear MA101 V.B
D-Link DWL-120 V.E
SMC 2662W V.2
We have had positive reports on these makes and models for TiVo Series2 DVRs whose TiVo Service Number starts with '110,' '130,' or '140':
NetGear MA101 V.A
D-Link DWL-120 V.A
We have had positive reports on the following makes and models for TiVo Series2 DVRs whose TiVo Service Number starts with
'230' or '240':
D-Link DWL-120 V.D
Linksys WUSB12
Hawking WU250
Microsoft MN-510

Right, but according to D-Link's site and every vendor I've come across, there's only one DWL-120 and none of them have a V.(anything) after the model number nor anywhere in the description that I can find.
I'd be surprised if one NIC would work on an 80 hour unit, but not a 60 hour one - that doesn't make sense to me.

you can consistently get the DLINK DUB-E100 from EBAY, http://search.ebay.com/search/searc...query=DUB-E100, for 9.95. It is also on Pony's list of working adapters.

Working? Yes.
Wireless? No.

This page will tell you how to determine the revision number (V.) of your DWL-120. There are four options: none, a, d, e.

Well, well, it looks like SOME people are a LOT better at reading the D-Link site than I am! :D
The NIC's I got are the newer style ones, which means they should be the A or the D model - hopefully whichever they are, both will work with my 60 and 80 hour TiVo's
I can't check because I still don't have 4.0, and let me tell you, it's really bumming me out :-(

Heh, I came across it while searching for WinXP driver info. Then I remembered this thread, and presto!
But you can't specify which rev you want when you buy one. I assume you just get the latest one. I bought mine in August and it's rev D, so I again assume that one bought today will have that rev or later.

I am using the Dlink DSB-650, picked it up at Circuit City, regular price of $14.95.

It might be worth noting, though, that version "e" actually looks completely different from previous versions, so if you're buying online, you should be able to tell from looking at the product image whether or not you're getting that version. (Version e is the one currently depicted on the DWL-120 product page at the D-Link site.) I can confirm that version e works just fine with my Sony SVR-3000 and AT&T Series 2.

Yes and no, lots of online stores use older product pictures - this happened when I ordered my wireless router from Dell - I was happy to have the new style snazzy one rather than the old style ugly one in the picture :)
I've got the new style NIC, and I was surprised at how small they are - anybody know if these are smaller than normal or did I just always have the scale of these things off in my head? Doesn't really matter, but I'm curious - the new NIC's aren't much bigger than a PCMCIA card (though they are thicker). I was expecting something the size of a small (4 port)switch.

I guess what I meant was that if you see the snazzy one in the product image (version e), that should be the one you get. But you're right, you might get that one even if they show the older one in the picture.
I was surprised by the DWL-120's small size, too. It is a bit smaller than most other adapters, I believe. The only problem is that it's so small and light that the weight of the mini-USB cord tends to keep it from sitting flat.

I use a d-link usb to ethernet adapter on my sony series 2 just fine. I'm not sure of hte model #, 750thx, something like that.

Yes! I think this needs to be solved before the "circuit connections are getting so small that the electrons keep bumping into each other" problem.

Well, it does come with some nice velcro that you can stick ALL over your TiVo :)
Yeah, it might be a good idea to include a metal plate that can be added to the NIC to give it some weight.
It's not going to matter much for me since my TiVo's are on a shelf or in a cabinet, so provided the NIC isn't too directional, I'll just be stuffing it behind the TiVo anyway.
Another day and still no 4.0. I really want to test these things out, darn it! I even clicked on the 'update me first' promo on both TiVo's. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get it within the return window for the NIC's, which is the only big thing I'm concerned about.
Edit:.....and in a development that should stun nobody, the sticker on the back of my NIC looks nothing like any of the ones posted on the D-Link site, so I have no idea which revision of the NIC I have.
I'll be surprised and disappointed if they don't work with my TiVo's, though. Well, WHENEVER I get the darn 4.0 d/l, I'll know for sure :)
