Phillips Remote : New Model (Not Responding)
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok I have had this happen at least 5 times this week and it is quite annoying. My remote stops responding sometimes and my only option is to telnet in and restart the TiVO. It seems this only happens when I am using the remote alot while a program is being recorded.
Does anyone know what process controls the remote functionality and if I can telnet in and kill the "dead" process (kill -9 PID) and restart the process so I have remote functionality without a reboot?
Thanks,
Rob
P.S. I posted this in the help center but was told to post my question in the underground.

Sounds like the annoying event bug. Running any hack that watches the remote events seems to make it worse. Killing the offending hack almost always unfreezes the tivo, but if that hack has accessed MFS the tivo will reboot on its own.
A forum search on "event bug" will give lots of reading material.

I have been trying to lock up the remote function all day... no luck so I can't test this theory. I believe the issue is TivoWeb. We shall see..
Thank you for the response.

I had this problem but only when TiVoweb was running.
I turned off the MFS browser module, Phone module and I haven't had a problem since.

I've had this very problem on both a Standalone Philips and a Hughes DTivo. It started on both of them after I got 3.0 or 3.01 (or whatever) and I put tivoweb on both of them (which I really can't live without.) It's such a pain to diagnose since it comes up fairly rarely, and definitely unpredictably. I'm now sure it's not my remote, because tonight the front-panel buttons on my DTivo refused to get any response.
I've searched on "event bug" and "event queue bug" and I've found very few hits. Other keywords I've used to no avail: remote control, hang, stuck, unresponsive, not responding, frozen, freezing, and any number of combinations of term.
And nothing definitive has ever come up.
If you know of any pertinent threads on this topic, could you *please* post a URL?
I've disabled the Phone and MFS Browser tivoweb modules, so I'll keep my
fingers crossed.
Thanks!

P.S. Do you think it might be the case of /var (where the logfile of remote
control keypresses are stored) being full? Just an idea. Duh, of course I
thought of it *after* telnetting in and doing a reboot. So I'll have to wait
until next time. Drat. :P

Well I turned off TivoWeb and I have not had anymore lockups. I personally don't see the usefulness of Tivoweb so it isn't a sacrafice in my eyes.
Thank you for all of the replies.

The search function doesn't seem to be what it once was. I had to set maximum search to find anything... These are useful.

There is no known system-wide solution. One of the threads mentions that TCS has the problem, but that is no longer accurate. TCS no longer causes the problem; More precisely, TCS recognizes the condition when it occurs and recovers from it. The method it uses is rather ugly, but it works. Tivoweb, and apparently even myworld can also trigger the problem. The problem has been reported on totally unhacked boxes. Tivo should fix this annoying bug, but I don't have any hope that they will.

The MFS module shouldn't be related.
