This new show is good! I'm sure I've never seen it before...
I see this episode explains the mysterious shadow seen during the pilot...

Future-whatta? Never heard of it. Must be one of those new cartoons that Fox is trying to put up since the Simpsons were so popular. Animation seems a bit familiar... this guy was really copying the Groening style.
Nice continuity in the show... :)

Damn! Looked like a good finale episode. Fry could have stayed in the 21st century and the whole series would have been a dream or something. But they let it linger.

Not sure - I'd never heard of it before, but they have a DVD of season 1 out! Maybe this was a reunion show.
Seriously, good episode. Funny and emotional all at once. As much as I love the Simpsons, the characters in Futurama are deeper. God, I'll miss this show....

Groening wasn't being copied here. This is Groening's show :)
It's a few years old and quite good if not well known.

I think maybe he was being sarcastic...
Yeah, that would have made a great series finale, a nifty bookend to the first episode. But we can take heart in the knowledge that when he found out it was going on hiatus, he prepared a special final episode just in case, so the series should have some closure. If they ever make it to the end, that is!

Was it in the pilot too or just when they showed the scene in this episode? I had recorded the pilot just last week off CN but I had already watched and deleted it so I couldn't check. Its amazing if they planned that from the beginning.

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle! I just looked at the DVD, and sure enough, there's a mysterious shadow with an antenna under the chair when it topples!

Of course now to be suitably paranoid we need to find someone that has a recording of the pilot on its orignial airdate so we can verify if the shadow in the dvd (and any possible rebroadcasts of the pilot) was added after the fact as a retcon so this episode would fit. Or if it was in fact included in the orignial broadcast. :)

(Why yes I am bitter about the fact that you can't get a non-special edition of starwars anymore)

I'm not entirely sure that should be a joke..."The Why of Fry" was produced as a mid-Season 4 episode, in other words, over a year ago. It's entirely possible that they altered the DVD to fit it into the new continuity!

Hmmm...Seems to me I recorded the original on *gasp* videotape back when it aired. I may have to go check.
In the commentary, they did mention changing the name of the New New York airport from it's original name, JFK Jr airport. After Jr's death that is. So maybe they made other changes....
Here's hoping the tape's survived. I'll report back.

Yep. I confirm that the events in the "Why of Fry" were premeditated. My original tape recorded from the premiere airing of the premiere episode clearly shows the same shadow as is seen on the DVD.
Despite my efforts to unravel this crucial question regarding the continuity of Futurama, I assert I do have a job, a wife, and a life. I'm not as geeky as I may appear for having gone back to the source material!

so, in your tape, did the guy specify JFK Jr. Airport as his destination?

Actually, the reason I remember that mysterious shadow was that I was surfing some Futurama (what's that?) websites a few years ago, and I recall when Nibbler was introduced, they had a pic from the pilot showing that shadow...
BTW, IIRC, the episodes were produced beforehand, so I suspect that shadow was placed in just before it was finalized (after the rest of the plots were decided upon) to allow for later jokes...
Of course, the only thing left is to find out where the other Fry's shadow is...

Yup, I can confirm that the shadow was there in the original pilot as well. :)
Way to plan ahead!

Well color me impressed... Who would think that they would think that far ahead for the pilot!

And given who we're dealing with, who would think they would even remember four years later! :D

I thought I had deja vu when I was watching this episode. I remember seeing Nibbler talk and the "Council of Elders" before and seeing a flashback of Fry falling into the freezer. So I looked it up and found it here. It was earlier this season. Apparently it showed Nibbler's eyestalk too. Anybody have "Jurassic Bark" on tape to verify?:)

Actually yes. I thought that was what it always said until I watched the DVD - didn't they change it to something like, "Radio City Mutant Hall" or something?

Hmph. Wish I did. Durn pre-emptions. I think this was one where my TiVo only caught the last 10 minutes or so because the NFL ran over. I watched just enough to be totally confused.
Kept hoping they'd rerun it. Oh, I was so naive back then....

Copied from epguides:
If you look very closely, you can see Nibbler's shadow when Fry falls into the cryogenic machine. In a later episode, "Jurassic Bark", when that seen is revisited, you can briefly see Nibbler's eye stalk, and there is a new shadow, resembling Fry. It will be explained in a future episode "The Why of Fry", when Nibbler takes Fry back to view his own past.

Well, I saw the eyestalk (it's not hard to find), but I'm having difficulty finding the shadow. I guess I need to look at the original picture first so I can find the general area. But I think there's a little spot between Fry's foot and the desk that could be it, but I can't zoom to find out...
Edit: mixed up phrases.
Edit2: OK, I found it. I was looking at the wrong place... cool!.
