Is it possible to not use phone line, just network?

Using a wired or wireless adaptor like the Linksys, is it possible to not use the phone connection with the Tivo and just use the internet to get programming info?
Or is this only with HMO?
Sorry, new user here (Tivo comes tomorrow!!!)

yes, if you have series 2 there is no need for a phone line

With v3.x you can only do this by a wired connection with an unsupported code you can find in the Underground, or using a costly wireless access point with a wired adapter. With v4.0 (released today to the first few people), you'll be able to use either wired or wireless, officially. (That'll be true whether you buy the HMO package or not.)

I probably know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyway. Is it possible to make the daily call through the internet if I don't have broadband -- I'm stuck with dialup. I have ordered HMO and will have a wired network connection. With the series 2 offer, I've lost my 800 number so am trying to save some money!

If you don't have a broadband connection you'll have to use the phone line. I really don't understand your question.

I think she's asking if she can use her own ISP which (presumably) is a local call, whereas calling a Worldcom POP (presumably) is not.
If that is your question, no, that feature wasn't announced as part of 4.0. Sorry. :(

No, actually, you can. If your computer is dialing into the Internet and then sharing the network connection across a home network, your TiVo can use that connection to pick up its service. The only trick you have is making sure your computer is always dialed in whenever TiVo needs to make its connection.

You could probably look into using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to have your TiVo use your local ISP's dial-up connection (this should work with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP, not sure about Macs). You already have your computer and TiVo networked together (for HMO stuff), so set up ICS and your TiVo should be able to jump on it (your computer will run a DHCP server that your TiVo needs for its LAN-based updates to work, or you can use a broadband router with a built-in DHCP server). You can either have your computer connected all the time, have it auto-connect for any internet access attempts or have it where you have to manually connect to your ISP before your TiVo can get its updates. This way, you don't have to worry about any toll calls (provided that your ISP's number isn't toll).
Check your Windows' help files about how to set up ICS (or you can ask around here).
(This should also work for people with Series1 TiVos using PPP over serial or Turbonet; check the underground forums on how to set these up.)

Well, last time I had a lineup problem, I was told to switch my Series2 to dialing via the modem instead of over the ethernet connection. (Got my missing channel, but other errors still remain.)
