Thought I could have a digital VCR

I recently took advantage of Tivo's offer to upgrade to a series 2 and transfer my lifetime service to it. It was a good move, I believe.

However, I thought I could use my old Sony SVR-2000 as a digital VCR and this turned out not to be the case :(. It has been 30 days since my new Tivo arrived and now my old Tivo will not allow any recording. It worked for the first 30 days; however, it stopped after 30 days.

I'm not looking to hack the service or anything sinister, I just want to use my old Tivo as a digital VCR. Can I downgrade the software version on it or something? There is no data on it that I am afraid of losing, can I just refresh the A drive? However, I do not have a backup of it :(.

There is a way to do it. Unfortunately, this board doesn't allow discussion of anything that could lead to service theft, and this hack could easily be twisted into service theft.

Thanks.

As I mentioned, I don't want to steal service or anything, I just want to get some use out of my $300 piece of hardware :).

If your SVR-2000 came from the factory with 1.3 software, it should allow manual recordings without a sub, Some of the last ones made had a post-2.0 version and would not allow this. Reverting the software won't help (and in fact won't work at all.)

If you remove the cover, look on the top of the disk drive for a stamped number that should be 1.3 or 2.0something.
